hi all im new to fishing and live near Arbroath im 24 and i used to go fishing when i was 8-9 year old and never caught anything i own a cheap rod and reel haha gotta start some where . was out with a mate at inverbervie and caught 3 mackerel and 2 pollack was very chuffed with myself and have decided to fish more often and was wondering if there was anyone around my area would mind me tagging along and get some pointers and also good places to go and what to fish for all help would be brilliant thanks

big wellcome to nesa. you lucky lucky lucky so and so, living up there,its very good sport up your area fishing it many a time while on holiday,as bigphil123 says cant go wrong on pier or next to old nightclub, just past football stadium. youve still got plenty time to catch and freeze as many mackeral as you can, as imo that is the number 1 bait up there in winter time for them BIG COD, usualy full of row . ps salt the mackeral before freezing tuffens them up. tight lines.:thumbup::thumbup:looking forward to your reports over the winter months. mains of usian good spot for your mackeral.

mark excuse what neil is saying, as for my information it is 100% sincere. we just like having a bit banter on here now and again. ps, when you catch them big cod on your frozen mackeral could you let all us nesa members know. 1st time i fished arbroath while on holiday winter time, had every bait bar MACKERAL ,had to go into local morrisons to buy them, had loads in my freezer at home. tight lines.:thumbup::thumbup:

Sorry to play Devil's Advocate but who, in their right mind, would choose to fish on Arbroath Pier when there are mile after mile of unspoit and, usually, unfished, shoreline all the way north to Montrose.

Went for a pint in Arbroath last time we were up and had a walk past the cages - cages 1 and 2 filled with middle aged "anglers" with their cans and picnics, on their phones, efing and blinding. They were the only anglers we saw all week.

My advice would be to find your way around the cliff marks, taking into account that Arbroath is a dangerous place to fish in the winter due to it's unpredictability, and do some "proper fishing". North and south of Usan are probably safer shots in bad weather.

Arbroath Pier was one of a few suggestions mate, but you are quite right about the options.

Never seen any but I have seen the barrier down when they are expecting big seas,thats to stop car and vans in case they get washed into the harbour.

One time I was up there the sea was banging over the pier and it moved the wall oposite 4 inches and that was a very thick wall.
