holy loch

fished it often in the early 80`s great fishing, fished the kilmun jetty until the ferrys came in and as said climbed across on to the last one to fish, there was a america guy had something to do with it,he used to leave the toilets open on the ferry on a night, great bloke, unfortunately this mark was lost to us after another group of anglers thought it would be a good laugh to untie the ferrys, also unfortunately north east anglers , one tale to,one of the lads was into photography big lenses the lot, thought he would take a few pics of the american floating dry dock with submarine in it, within 20 minutes two of the biggest yank mp`s arrived and informed him that it was a politically sensitive area and that he had to hand over his film, after a brief discussion about it being his property, the mps informed him that they had orders to confiscate the film, needless to say the film was handed over and a receipt gave for him to be reimbursed the cost of the roll of film, still remember him later ..... didnt have to give them it ya kna ... had visions of him being turned upside down on the kilmun jetty and shook ...

Helensburgh, remind me of the time myself and a few lads from the shire moor club had just finished our deep fried pizza and chips from the Lido chippy, when some-one suggested a bit of a crabbing session down by the jetty. So waders on we charged down onto the for shore crabbing away, when there was this almighty scream of horror,:eek: Frankie Oldham had his arm right at the back of a 40 gallon drum half submerged in the sand when a large rat ran up his arm and over his shoulder.:o:o:o:o Well me, Alec Harvey, Bob Gasgoine, and a few others just fell about laughing at Frankie, who had turned into a gibbering wreck. Yougotolaugh.

:Dmy goodness canman you have kept some bad company in your time:exclam::exclam: harvey gasgoine:o:o

fished it loads in the early 70,s up to the early 80,s as said in post till it got raped by the trawlers, bloody rag worm like snakes, and fish galore used to stay at helensburough and killkreggan i was only 8 year old in 1970 armed with a bamboo rod and mitchell reel and my fathers home made rod stand slaters lat i think,we would leave tynesisde stay on the border friday night pick up my uncle then drive up for a week, with me being car sick all the way, never missed a trip but,the fishing made up for car sick, happy days

just amazed myself on how trawlers were allowed into sea lochs to trawl, i would of thought trawling would of been ilegal or were they trawling in darkness unditected,

why was the sea lochs allowed to get this bad.

maybe its the same as balcary it was noted for very big cod yet you dont seem to hear about it now.

present prevailing westerleys we are getting used to be ideal conditios over there when there was a lull in the wind.

Great thread this, a good read. Slight deviation, when kids we used to go up to Carradale for the summer hols in the late 70's. Fishing into the kilbrannan sound off of the little pier there. It was literally a coddy a chuck, all good size. The guys coming in on the small boats used to give us a bucket full of scallop to use as bait, great stuff. Unbelievable congers pulled up on that jetty, 20lbers +, also seen a massive monk fish washed up there. Went back there about 20 year ago with wor lass and the kids and couldn't wait to have a chuck, when I did there was nowt there. Ha

does any of yous remember innellan jetty the big shelter on the end of it about 4 miles from dunnoon , i had a plaice 5lb 4oz from there caught on clam , i wish i could go back in time with the tackle we have now, then it was abu 484 abu 7000 red or 9000 red jim :D

I first fished around the Firth of Clyde and the lochs in 1972 with my older brother and Dicky Shenton from Seaham.
Loch long,Rhu narrows,Cloch point.
Then there were plenty of Cod,my biggest was 9lb from Cloch point lighthouse.Fresh crab was always the best bait
The Rhu narrows was good at low water for Pollack with Dickies spinners.
In Loch long you sometimes caught the big mussel (Clammydoos)while bottom fishing, some up to 6 inches long.
The Gantocks off Dunoon was a hot spot in the boat for double figure Cod then.
Sadly the Firth and the lochs a crap now, only the odd LSD and flatty seem to be caught.

I used to fish the area in the mid to end of the seventies with my old man and my mates, i remember catching haddock in the middle of holy loch and thinking this is weird with the mountains each side. I'm sure the American guy had the hotel at Blairmore or Kilmun, he used to fill our flasks for our all nighters, and i used to do sausage sarnies on a little fold out solid fuel burner for brekkie great days :)
