how far out?

I was just wondering and thought I would ask you guys this but what would be the maximum distance you would take a 18ft Plymouth Pilot out?

It's not that I would go that far, just would like to know your thoughts.

18ft probably 3 to 5 miles depending on conditions ... with 8 miles on a real good forcast day (on the understaning all sefety gear,radio etc are on board)

Noted and thanks. I was thinking 2-3 miles out while I was getting more comfortable with the boat and yes I have all the flares, VHF, vests etc.

The lads on the south coast think nothing of travelling many miles out in their 16footers and wonder why we stay so relatively close in.
I read some advice about how as a beginner you’ll probably stay close in until you’ve confidence borne of experience to decide when to push out a bit further. If you already have that confidence without experience then you could be in trouble.

Totally agree with you mate and alot of my day job is risk mitigation. I was just wondering what the theoretical maximum was.

i think the one thing to remember with a plymouth pilot is its a slow boat

most of the guys that venture offside are using boats that are doing 25 knots

Me and Micky have had Growler over 10 miles off and she is only 15feet. We fish at Creswell quite a bit and that is around 7 miles from Amble. The things to consider are as mentioned previously, weather forecast, speed of the vessel, saftey gear and maintanence etc. If there is a huge high sat over the north sea I would go as far as fuel (the cost!) allowed personally.

Thought it didn't matter how far out you were, you were never more than feet(x 100's) away from land albeit in a downward direction.

Have to agree, 5 miles is a good distance. Was about the limit on the pilot I used to have. Yes its a slow plod back, but there's no better 18' boat to plod back through a snotty sea with

One of the benefits of a displacement hull is it will plod on through the rough sea that a planing hull struggles with. I used to fish the Geogie porgie wreck which is about 10 miles east of the Tyne, but only on a flat sea and a good forecast, in a 17ft pilot 5-20 (17ft) and with the company of another boat. Regarding boats venturing out further on the south coast, there are a lot more people boating down there, and help would never be too far away, unlike here, when there is sometimes not a boat in sight. lost of intersting 'ground bait' around the georgie porgie - its where the burails at sea take place! the sea bed there is littered with coffins!

i used to use a 21 foot triton coble with a seven foot beam,cabable of about 6 knots(kubota 2 cyl ) i went up to 7 miles and the boat felt as though it was 10 feet long out there!!
