The fish are starting to show now in good numbers from charter and private boats, and having read reports that supposedly we dont return many fish, how many fish should 1 person keep?

I keep all cod first few couple of trips to top the freezer up for the winter, would say around 20 fish or 40 fillets, after that i keep 1-2 cod per weekend for fresh eating.

Others take everything and give it away or feed cats, as long as it dont get wasted i guess its upto the catcher to do what he wants with it.

Nobody should be made to feel guilty because they keep more than one fish.

None of the fish I catch and keep goes to waste.

we all eat fish, all our family`s eat fish, couple of neighbours, nowt rong with taking what you catch, that is ofcourse there good size..... !

as already said no one can tell you what to keep (presuming you catch any....)
as long as it doesn't get wasted , ie why take 40 cod home if you can't fillet them or you don't have room in your freezer, or you don't eat them? don't feel bullied by the catch and release culture, you are entitled to keep any size fish you catch, and equally you can return any fish you like, just use your own common sense and do whatever feels right to you.....

Well m8 its up to you what you want to take home for the table and the freezer as i am sure whatever you catch and keep dont come in wrong for rainy days and fish undersize say about 2 to 3lbs should be returned as to be honest by the time you gut them and fillet them there/s nothing left on them maybe a couple of fish fingers so there you are thats my point of view m8.

as long as its legal size and going to be eaten,and not wasted:exclam:,my take on the matter is that its perfectly allright to keep em.


and i must emphasise once again,that more and more anglers(boat) private and charter are putting fish back

i have been at sea sat/sunday last,and have viewed agood number of size fish put back

If There Legally Sized ( Preferably Bigger) Keep Them All, Throw Them All Back. Its Up To The Individual just DON'T kill and waste them

What i normally do is keep a few at the start ,and then anything after that unless its big goes back for another day ,but its up to the individual really ,just like everybody else has said ,as long as its not wasted or binned,
I do get annoyed when i see people keeping small cod or Ling though ! LET IT GO think about tomorrow.

I usually stop at 10, for my own and family and friends needs. Keep cod of around 2lb only if badly hooked. When filleted, a 2lb codling will only give two 6oz fillets. If that same codling lives another year, it will be around 4lb, that's how quick they grow, so the benefits of returning them is obvious.

had a couple codling too 2lb today that i put back ,enjoyed watching them swim back down unharmed
