not only am i a keen sea angler but i,m not a bad cook [our lass seems to think so ] anyway, what has this to do with fishing bait i,ll tell you.in cooking you marinate meat with different flavours to inpart that flavour in to the meat think chineese spare ribs and you,l get the picture. Now i know the raw prawns from asda ingrate flavours more than any other meat [they are more pourous]so i thought get some frozen runnydown mash it up in the blender till it looks like mud then pour it over the packet of prawns ,leave for 2to3 days in a cool place then do a session whith that bait .I,v out fished every one in the last 3 outings using nothing more than the marinated prawns first sesh i got 22 whitties my two mates got 3 each using rag ect. second sesh same again plus a 5 and half pound cod [only one hooked that night] the last sesh nothing catching, flatcalm still managed 6 flatties. try it you might get a pleasant supprise

cracking idea mate might give it ago with a diff mixture of things like mussel and prawns or razor and prawns (razer smells much worse than it looks lol )

Paul just going to have a word with Eileen about putting the lug in the blender

I might be quite a while lol

good idea, i tried fresh unshelled prawns this season without success, thought as some of the fish had them in the gut it would be a good bait, got to try this one

try freezing the prawns after marinading them because as they freeze they draw the flavours into them even better

i speak from experience here - im a chef !!
I use this method alot to really get flavour into meats etc.

Chris what you are saying is nearly correct, by freezing them after marinating does make them better.
The flavouring is actual drawn to the centre of the meat as the meat defrosts, this method is used a lot when preparing flavoured baits in coarse fishing.

im gona have a try at that mate
the opptions are endless
prawn/lug
prawn/rag
prawn/peeler crab/hermit crab hmmmmmmm??????
prawn/razor
prawn/limpits
prawn/mussel
prawn/macky
prawn/clam
ect ect ect.................

Ahem....sorry to state the obvious but.....surely fishing a cocktail of the two would create the same scent combination without the hastle? Black lug/runnydown tipped with yer prawn?

my dad told me to get a contaner and put a layer of jam on the bottom and then some rag and then put jam on top of them and leave it for a day or to so i laffed at him but give it a shot and it worked quite well comerd to my m8s that had nowt lol try it

thanks loopy i was going to keep it secret but thought what the hell we are all in the same boat and as they say every little helps.phantom not quite true ,imagine lets say a bunch of basil[don,t laugh]it has a smell ,then chop the basil up very fine the smell that comes out of it is 20times more pungent, thats excatly the same as what i did with the runnydown ,then i needed a medium to hold that strong scent hence raw prawns, also they have thier own scent wich i believe is only secondary to the runny down but still helps. in 3 sessions using only that bait i,v cought 38 whitings 1, 5 and half pound cod and 6 flatties ,so i think it has some potential

Phantom,

I think the idea is to embed the flavour of the runnydown into a slow release medium...ie the prawn.

So rather than the runnydown having its juices washed immediately away as appears to be the case , the prawn will gradually release the scent along with its own scent.

Well worth a try and the only downside I can see is that runnydown is refreezeable but would doubt the prawn runny combo is. The upside is that if the essence of two or three runnydown is enought to taint a bag of prawns a very expensive bait becomes more cost effective.

The other point to note is that if like me you have tried prawns and ended up eating more than you used....just make sure you eat the right ones!!!

Cheers
Dave

What flavour jam do you use???

I know I regularly visit my local pet shop to get any hamsters that have died, I take them home mash them up a bit and then boil them, add a bit sugar and make them into jam, I then sprinkle the jam onto my flower beds and it brings the flowers up a treat.

But everyone knows "You get Tulips from Hamsterjam" :D
