If the seas flat?

Hi lads,
If the sea is flat are you better of trying, of the piers, or off one of the cliff/ rock marks?

And if the piers, is it still worth putting out a bigger cod bait or are you better off just scratching?

My dads coming up for New Years day and I wanted to take him out fishing somewhere.

Thanks for any help,
Geoff

Just had a walk along Marsden and its like a mill pond, has been for the last few days. You'd be better off scratching for whities.

doesnt matter where ya fish mate its always worth putting a big bait out for cod i would try a rock marks or the pier even the river still got a chance of getting a cod out.

I had a 4lbr last year up near city centre after weeks of it being flat on a tiny whitin bait u just never know. id try the river meself maybe smith docks

Allways put big baits out would rather have a big fish. Ne good the tiddlers but ppl fish in differnt
Ways each to tha own

Thanks very much for all the help, really appreciate it.

I think I'll try the Wear, as me dads bound to get something, and all the little fish might give a cod a reason to be there. Plus with us fishing the daytime it may have a bit of colour in it.

Think we will try the glass centre, never fished there but assume its straight forward, not too snaggy?

Thanks again lads!

Try the Rathouse walkway behind the yacht club. It's impossible to blank there and there are no snags at all from the second bench to the end corner. A great spot any state of tide or weather. Use a two hook flapper for scratching and if you have a second rod no harm in trying a big cod bait cos you never know.

I fish three hook flappers which i make up myself. Two 1-0 hooks one the top and one 3-0 on the bottom.9with decent size bait on) You can then fish for both. If you have a slight bite just leave it until it develops.
Course if you want distance then its a pulley rig.
Deep water is better when its flat but then i suppose you never can tell.

for cod......

either stop at home and have a tin:D

or head for a pier drum end, cast as far as ya can and hope for the best:D

wasting ya time inshore unless ya lucky like a few jammy gets i know locally recently:p

Cambois, beacons, se corner ssp, bog hall rocks, plenty marks fish in a flat calm, some like the beacons you can only fish safely when its flat.
Problem is the fish have largely dissapeared over the last week or so.
I fished easington today, way out my comfort zone as Ive never fished there and got a 2.5lber from the rock edges.
Tomorow beacons.

More great advice, thanks guys.

Think I will fish the rat house as has been suggested just to give me dad a decent chance of a fish.
Then I will concentrate on some local rock marks before I go back to work next week.

Trust me to go back just as the seas start!

Happy new year everyone, and thanks for your help.

Just to say thanks again for all the advice.

My dad had one of his best days shore fishing for years and I remembered how fun whiting bashing is.
And all in daylight, probably the first time I've shore fished during the day for six years.
Looking forward to getting back out again before next week.
Thanks again.

My favourite part of the Rathouse is the second bench along from the car park but anywhere from there to the end is snag free. The first part (before the second bench) has a few snags.
