Some of you may or may not have heard of the accident this morning involving two auxillary coastguards at Newbiggin

At approx 0830 this morning, a vessel was reported in distress off Beacon Point, Newbiggin with 4 persons on board. A rescue operation was launched involving Newbiggin lifeboat, coastguard teams, the fire service and the ambulance service.

The coastguard team had gone along the track by Newbiggin Golf Course and for some unknown reason the vehicle has left the track and rolled approx 20 feet down the cliffs. The two coastguards in the vehicle were injured and trapped. They were released by fire crews and airlifted to Wansbeck Hospital by a helicopter from RAF Boulmer.

Thankfully, their injuries are not life threatening and I am sure you will all join me in wishing them both well and hope for a speedy recovery

It is reassuring to know that we have dedicated individuals in our emergency services in this country, whether full time or part time, paid or volunteer, that are willing to put themselves in danger for the safety of others

from what i have heard the boat they went to help, was last seen putting back out to sea and heading for Amble, the mind boggles.
Hope the two lads make a full recovery.

All the best to the lads. Being an Auxillary myself I know the feeling of being undervalued by the public with the majority not seeming to know what we actually do. We are on call 24 hrs a day to respond to emergencies just like this.
We should all be aware that putting our own lives in danger also puts people like the lads form Newbiggin at risk from accidents like this. Simple safety checks beforehand lessens the risk and having the right equipment like radios and lifejackets in case of a breakdown can mean we respond much quicker. Not all accidents are preventable, but just remember we are ordinary lads and lasses like yourselves, many with young families, who want to help members of the public in difficulty.

Just the other week My team at Boulmer were called to help a bloke who fallen on the rocks and broken his leg. We had to stretcher him over weed strewn rocks for about 200 yds and he must have weighed on the plus side of 18 stone!

You been down to the fair to see if there\'s any fish in that ducking pool? Or are you ogling the wenches like the rest of us?
 
I thought the ducking pool had been scrapped....something about health and safety.

Shame.

I can think of a few I\'d like to see strapped to a chair and submerged for a few minutes !

Colour of the water as I walked past this morning - no wonder. Proper cholera pool if ever I\'ve seen one.
