ipad !!!

Am looking to maybe buy one of these, but am wondering if anyone has one and can give any unbiased views..am looking at the 3g 64gb model.

I am wondering wether it will be any good to use for work, especially as a diary based system, but more importantly to access the internet at all times to download/store any and all information/specifactions of boiler manufacturers technical data for use in servicing /repairs and part numbers access for replacement parts.

I used to have a panasonic toughbook to do the above work, but it's knackered and a new cf 18 toughbook is far to expensive for me.......i dont want to take my macbook pro to work as it would get scratched and possibly damaged.

Any advise or possible alternative idea's would be greatfully recieved.

not gonna comment on the iPad as it might be a tad predictable!

if you want another toughbook, got some older ones in the shed, Pentium 2, 8ooMhz ish with touchscreens...

nah sod it, buy and iPad and stick it in an armoured silicon skin!

Thanks Mark,

Was going to pm you with the question, but hoped you would be looking in and give your opinion.....looks like it's PC world in the morning, especially as i've just seen the 6 months free credit advert......where would i get the skin thing you mention?

apple store... or buy one on ebay for a fraction of the price

check out the deals in the apple store (metro centre or eldon square) before you go to pc world, might be a better deal

ipad gotta be worth it really for the range of apps

The prices on the ipad seem to be fixed at around the same price, not sure if thats something that Apple state to the sellers, the prices all seem around the £680-£700 mark for the 64Gb.......not sure about ebay though, but will have a look beforehand.

I could maybe save some money and go for the smaller Gb storage, as i wont be storing movies etc maybe it will do.......not really sure though what a Gb consists of in terms of what i need storage wise, 99% of the time it will be used for accesssing the internet, have tried the last few days using my iphone but cant get enough detail on it for wiring diagrams/parts lists etc, so hopefully the bigger screen will help.

I agree with Mark...get yerself to the Apple store. The guys there will sort you out. I have one and use it when I am working out and about. I do HR for a local community interest company, on a self employed basis. I use mobile me to make sure that my macbook pro and the ipad is synced with each other and my iphone. I was advised by the apple store to use Bento for my employee records and everything has been working perfectly. I can access all my info wherever I am with no fuss whatsoever.

The iPad is great for all sorts......Angry Birds to keep me entertained if I arrive early or someone doesn't turn up :D. During the summer we were traveling up to Arisaig and found that the m74 was closed due to an accident. The iPad came into its own - could check the traffic situation, google maps showed me that the road I used to travel as a kid was a useful alternative, the kids watched a movie while we were traveling around and i even got them to answer a couple of emails for me and let the campsite know that we were running late. Great piece of kit :D

the pads themselves are the same price everywhere, its the accessories (ie skins) that are a fraction of the price on ebay

64gb is lot if you're going to fill it with choons and movies

got hundreds of apps on my 16Gb iPhone and plenty of room left

Do you have to keep swapping your sim card between iphone & ipad? or do you have to have 2 contracts? or do they give you 2 sims? or can they be paired and use one sim card?

Just wondering in case I win the lottery :D

I beleive it might. As long as you don't upgrade to 4.2 thats not an issue as you can reset and factory store and no one will ever know

4.2 has some very sneaky stuff which if you jailbreak, records the jailbreak in hardware in such a way that even after a factory restore, it remembers that it was at one point jailbroken

limera1n seems to be the best 4.1 option at the moment for jailbreaking pads/phones (as long as its not 4.2)

and to be honest, I don't see anything in 4.2 that makes it worth upgrading to anyway

down side is that at some point newer apps will start demanding 4.2 minimum OS, but.... there should be a fix for that.

going way way back (talking 20 years or more) there was something called Gestalt ID in the mac os which was used to declared what type of machine and what OS was installed. Gestalt is still in iOS, and way back there were laods of little utils for faking the gestalt ID. have heard rumours of a wee app to do just that on the iOS

Mark.......what's this tethering thing ??, will it save me money not having to get another contract sim.

Went to pc world today, seen the amount of cars in the carpark....turned around and went back home.

tethering - allows you to use your phone as a 3G modem effectively, so your laptop, iPad or whatever connects to the internet via the phones connection

your phone becomes like a wireless router. I use it all the time when I'm away, do 'netty stuff on the laptop, but it all gets connected through the phoen

Well been and bought the 64gb ipad from PC world today as they have interest free credit for 6 months.

I have seen the ideal program for me for the boiler work, however it only seems to be available in a windows based SD card, is there any apps out there that could allow me to purchase this system and use it, the system is www.partsarena.info.....hopefully Mark has a solution
