jigging vs uptideing

Jigging and fishing lures works well in clear water when the fish can see a lure.

In the winter when fish have moved inshore where the water is often mucky, a juicy bait anchored to the bottom sends a scent trail out for the fish to find. I think that the fish are slower in the colder water and so are less inclined to chase a moving lure but will scavenge and mop up easy pickings like an anchored bait.

yes I think its down to clarity of water. and the fact that the cod spawn in the winter so move close in. You will still pick fish off wrecks if water is clear, I hope to try a few with jiggers when weather allows.

a point to remember there are no rules in fishing and anything can work at any given time, the fish don't play by rules if they did we probably woundn't enjoy it so much. it's 90%luck 10% skill

its more than water clarity

drift: no point drifting over a wreck with a knot of drift...but on anchor its ok

scent: high scent baits like cart, lug, mussel lure cod towards you. you dont need to find the fish, they find you

temperature: cod likes cold water. in summer you need to go deep to find the water below 10C...in winter the cold water reaches inshore

uptiding in theory works all season, but with warm and clearer waters in summer its not good.

exactly correct! forget all the text book crap about drift speed scent strength etc etc
certainly those things can help, but how many times has everything been right according to the text book, and not a fish in sight.

in short the fish dont play by rules whether it be game coarse or sea

people who believe fishing is luck usually dont catch much...

if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any, I might add that the 10% skill will catch 90% of the fish but not 100% of the time,,,if you get my drift.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Visited 3 wrecks, anchored in 3 inshore uptiding locations, used shads, cart, squid, hokkais

result: you guessed...a BLANK
not having a go but it makes a point:confused:

maybe luck is not knowing why you catch so many fish and skill is knowing why you don't but aren't lucky enough to change it. i'm going back to bed! no luck there either. not even a nibble.:(:(

on the subject of jiggers, just knocked up some 250 gm speed jiggers, anybody had any luck(ooops) using them. they are covered in heat shrink and I added some glow in the dark tape to some.

Read my catch reports...I am actually useless at uptiding !!

:)

I do read them, not having a go but I think we all like to think that it is down to skill when we have a good day and bad luck when we don't. We are all in the same boat. Not here to ruffle feathers so not going to fall out over a point of view. I've fished many times in near perfect conditions with fish showing all over but blanked and vice versa.... why? if I only knew. We've all been there when the bloke next to you is fishing identical rigs to you , he catches and you don't, or a novice wipes the floor with you...why? i'll put the unknown down to luck, good or bad.
