when would use say the winter season begins and ends i would say September till the end of February.

well usually i start october ..but started mid september this winter.. luckly it paid off with a double ..... and slow down the fishing come end of feburary ..but last season had good bags of fish in march with a bit of a sea on ..things seemed to of quietend down now but still a chance of a lunker out there in the right conditions

Winter can start as early as the back end of august for me, given the right conditions, but kicks in properly in september. I was still getting codlings to about 4lb from the ice-house at the back end of april last year, then spent 3 weeks or so crabbing until the back end of may, when I started heading to Beadnell for the summer fish.
Only one club match left to fish this winter, but I'll probably spend march / april pleasuring in the river like last year with maybe the odd trip to shields pier. So for me the season doesn't finish till mid / late april & the crab come on.

Well lads by the look of it by the end of february its time to put your feet up and chill out untill back end of April to the beginning of may when the macky/s come in.Good god what can we do untill then cant stop in with the missus as i will get nagged to death ha-ha. Get rid of the missus,
March - Codling inshore and a few scotchies
April - Codling inshore some decent hauls but only to about 5lb
May - (early) Lots of codling inshore
May (Later) Cod and Ling showing on wrecks
June - Cod and ling on wrecks 8lbs to 10 lbds
July (early) - Doubles showing on wrecks
July (mid to Late) - MANIC Fishing on wrecks with big ling and Cod in numbers
July (end) - Shad Mad time fish everywhere
Aug - Big cod and Ling on wrecks
Sept - Big Cod and Ling on wrecks
Oct - slowing off ..........
