What a weekend.
Me and my mate Shaun got up there at 7.40 on Saturday morning. After a cup of coffee at a mate of ours, off we went to draw our pegs for the flattie match. 4 zones over various parts of the river, hopes were high as conditions were good as there was no fresh water in the river, a light breeze and red hot. I drew peg 24, next door to Chris Stringer. To cut a long story short, I had 1 flattie for 20cm, he had 187cm :casstet:
The River...
Anyway, a quick race to the digs, no time to get changed as it was straight to the hotel bar to watch the England match - that first pint never touched the sides.....
We\'ll say nothing else about the match
With 2 other lads from the north east, we headed to Castle Douglas at 7 to meet the scottish lads and a few more sherbets were sunk, Shaun starting to feel the pace late on.....
Back to the hotel at 11, more drinks, and Shaun gave up.....
Day 2
Feeling surprisingly good, off we headed to our favourite spot. Word was that there\'d been the odd smoothie caught, so Shaun set his stall out for them all day with crab on a single hook rig. Me, 3 size 1\'s clipped down with half a sandeel, ragworm and crab for dogs, with the outside chance of a smoothie on the crab. A slow 1st couple of hours was brightened up just aafter high water when I got this........
Only a small smoothie at 3-10-0, but my first and I was chuffed to bits. Within 10 minutes, I seen Shaun battling with something and out it came......
A common smoothound at just under 8lb! It\'s a potential Scottish record and is now in one of the scottish lads freezer awaiting confirmation. With everyones interest renewed, I got a bite soon after. After waiting to see if it would develop further, I struck into a dead weight. After pumping it in for what seem an age, out came 4 doggies on 3 hooks!!! . An hour later, and Shaun was into another good fish. After a good battle, out it came....
A 9-15-0 Thornback, which won Shaun £210 overall, as with the Smoothie (and another smaller one) and 5 dogs, he was 3rd overall.
But he wasn\'t finished there. 10 minutes later, he hooked into another good Smoothie. After yet another battle, he got it into the side, only for it to get caught on a ledge and off it went. It was estimated as a double figure fish.
Among the fish at the weigh in were a 9lb Tope, 6lb pollack and 3 more small thornies. Heaviest bag was just over 44lb of dogs by Davy Little.
A fantastic weekend, with Shaun having a day most of us can only dream about.
