Lovely day out. Not many fish though.

I started this morning at Hebburn, at the old quay end of the marina off the planks. Not long after I got set up I was joined by another fella who said he'd been to South Shields but it was far too windy. First cast I pulled in a whiting and a crab and that was as good as it got for me. Used rag/mackerel for bait as I had some rag left over from Monday. The other bloke was not having a good day at all. He'd already had trouble with his car, then his reel nested up twice and lost all his gear. Then he told me his fixed spool reel was kaput, the handle had somehow cross threaded. He must have tripped over his rod about three times, it was a cracking looking rod, an MTI ZERO 300. I am not familiar with this make of rod but I looked them up and they aint cheap.
I packed up about 12.30 and wished him better luck, hope things got better for him because he was a canny bloke.
Next I went to feed the crabs at South Hylton near the Golden Lion with some light gear. Used frozen crab, mackerel, black lug and ragworm with two hooks but nothing doing. That said it was a lovely place to spend the afternoon with loads of wildlife and a few photographers.
It was great to get a days fishing in with some lovely weather, a few more fish would have been nice!

At least yer never blanked mate, it's not a bad venue the old quay like. That other guy didn't have much luck in any respect, just hope when he left he didn't chuck a left straight into the drink like.

Sometimes it's not just about the fish. I really liked the rod that fella had. It was quite slim with a sensitive tip but looked powerful also. I have had my Century Saturn for about 13 years now, but it looks a bit stiff and heavy duty compared to the modern ones. Might have a look around at some of the newer ones. A few months back into fishing and want a new rod already ??!!

MTI Zero 300
Manufactured from top quality carbon this low diameter, light weight, ultra fast taper action blank is designed for maximum range casting and rough ground fishing with leads between 5 and 6ozs, plus bait.

Though retaining outstanding bite detection, the power flow through the blank is rapid contributing to massive power availability in the lower mid section and ultra stiff butt. The light weight ratio of the blank increases overall casting speed adding distance to the cast, but has the added bonus of increasing the sensitivity of the rod in the hands of the angler.

Superbly finished in a hi-gloss black to minimize salt and dirt adhesion, the rod is supplied with lightweight corrosion proof coaster fittings, plus an 18” extension tube allowing the rod to be fished and cast with the reel positioned conventionally high up on the rod butt, or reel low on the rod butt for maximum range. For heavy rough ground fishing we recommend a high reel position for maximum leverage and power.

•Length: 13’6”
•Two-piece, plus 18” Extension Tube
•Intermediate Rings: Fuji SIC MNSG
•Tip Ring: Fuji SIC MNST
•Tip Highlight: White Light Reflective
•Butt Cap: Fuji Rubber Push On
•Lines: 15 to 30lbs
•Casting Weight: 5-6ozs plus
•RRP £329.99

Yeah, I had already checked out the website and reviews. If he hadn't been so hassled I would have asked him for a cast with it. Not with his reel though!

I think there's still one in Lewis Tackle in Whitley Bay, it's been in the rack for a long while - can't remember the price on it (nowhere near £329), but you get 10% off as a NESA member....

Gary :)

I nearly bought 1 of these as av heard good reports on them Apparently theyre unsnappable
I went into id and the young lad with the greggorys on held the tip end while i pulled the butt section and it just kept going over and over almost bent double on itself
Well worth a look at
