Many years ago while most anglers fished the pier I used to fish with my uncles from Peepeing Toms and the Stone Pier and inside the South Harbour. You can no longer fish the stone pier, and catch lots of mackerel, so it must be feasible to catch mackerel from the Jetties.

had an hour or 2 there yesterday, total waste of time, the gill netter were out had the pier netted from about 500yards out from the end, past the bend and half way to the beach. At some points the nets were less than 20 or 30 feet from the pier. couple of lads on the end were filling a bag with sand eels, saw nothing else caught anywhere

You\'ll catch Mackerel in the river providing theres big shoals around the piers and the river is fairly clean, better off trying the pier at least you should catch some if they are inshore, best at first light and dusk
