Done a mackerel trip with Sapphire yesterday. 4 Dads, 5 kids, Peter and Chris.
My first time on Sapphire.
Started at 6pm and stopped half a mile out where the water cleared a bit. Few mackerels, nothing frantic, but everybody---and especially the kids- caught. Mission accomplished.
We then decided to have a go at a wreck @3mile. NE swell and a big roll...after 2 miles steaming, most on board turned green. Peter and I agreed to stop the boat to give everybody a recovery and a coke until we carry on for the last mile to reach the wreck.
Peter looked at the finder and said "Get some feathers in!"
What happened then is something I heard about, but never actually experienced. Mackerels whereever you looked. Every angler on every sinker brought at least 2, but mostly 4 mackerels in. Good size as well. Even the 7 year old girls reeled them in like candies and got very excited. The seasickness settled instantly and green faces pinked up !
We stopped at this point for about an hour and comfortably had a few hundred mackies. We decided not to go to the wreck as the fog turned very thick and the swell got bigger.
Back home to Sunderland with more fish than we could handle
Boat: Very comfortable, clean, well equipped Aqua Belle.
Skipper: Very nice and knowledgable man. Put life vests (brand new) on the kiddies, rigged the riggs for them, let them sit on the skippers seat for photos, explained the fishing, instruments etc. happy to change plans with us, even whiped the sick of one of the kids !!! On the way home, he went through almost invisibility thick mist like a train on tracks back to the marina.
I realised some discussions here on the forum and I have not been out on a wrecking trip with this boat...
however, I have been out this year with the best charter boats of the north east. I am not a man who goes for second best and I cannot see any reason why Sapphire is not right up there at the very best.
I will be back, thats for sure. The kids could not fall asleep for excitement, despite the seasickness they want to do it again! again!
My friends and neighbours waited with their plastic bags for my return.
