The Herring boat caught record is one pound one ounce, it was caught in 1973 at Bexhill on sea.
The shore record is yet to be claimed but the qualifying weight is one pound.
The Allis Shad (Alosa Alosa) shore record is four pound twelve ounces and seven drams, 1977 Dorset.
The Twaite Shad (Alosa Fallax)shore record is two pounds twelve ounces. Neither of this species can now be claimed as records as they are protected and must be returned alive to the water.
The Shads look very like the Herring as they are the same family but the Herring does not have black spots on it's sides. The twaite Shad has up to 10 black spots on each flank, the Allis has only 6 on each flank.
