Marine radio course.

Any ideas where I can do the marine radio course? What sort of money does it usually cost?
Thanks

As you drive into South Shields from sunderland the college on your right hand side I did mine there in the 90s can't remember how much but not mega expense I did a night time course with a small exam which you have to pass it's not a attendance course to pass Ian.

Give Sunderland marina a ring ,they do them 2 or 3 times a year.Cost between £100 and £ 120 that includes exam and certificate.
Good luck with it, its well worth doing and keeps you legal,

Just done mine with coastwise at Hartlepool. The course Was internet based and after paying £120 you can download it and do it at your leisure . When you are happy then you do a pretest knowledge assessment which is multichoice. Then you contact the guy who does the tests and arrange a suitable time. You then do about six or seven scenarios, it lasts about an hour or so. That's how it went for me . I think you can opt to join a class but there has to be enough on the course so dates might not be as flexible as home study. The course you download is very good and they send you a book to match the course. They send you the SRC within two weeks. Don't forget you will need a ships radio licence from ofgem to get your mmsi number before you can legally use your radio. This is free if you apply via their website. hope this helps. good luck.

Did mine at friers goose boat club, guy called Ken, give them a ring and ask, think it was about 80 quid, great bloke.

To play devils advocate here, is it not a waste of money for the small boat owner.

I hear the characters from Sunderland and the they must have a special set of Sunderland rules...:red:

correct me if i am wrong but it is an offence to operate a vhf radio without a licence with a possible £5000 fine and/or 6 mths imprisonment. So if you are thinking of buying one you need the licence.
