Mini Fishing

My daughter is starting to cry when I go fishing now because she is desperate to come, and I'd love to take her fishing sometime.

Of course I'm not going to take a 3 year old to the top of target rock :o

But I was wondering if any of you, who have taken their little one's out have any advice?
She's 3 years old and very bright, so I don't have any concerns about her safety or following any instructions,

But does anyone know of any daytime child friendly marks where we might catch something? (I'm from South Shields)
Or has anyone any experience of taking a 3 year old fishing and is it a nightmare?

You thoughts would be appreciated :D

Walkway would be easy surely? ultra small hooks down the side and go for tiddlers...after all they'll be MASSIVE to a 3 year old :)

Used to take my lads on Shields pier when they were younger, just in front of the steps before you reach the small wall. They would fish straight down the side using a #4 hook baited with mackerel, and more often than not catch a good number of coalies.

hi mate,i have got four kids under elleven and all have been fishing with the exception of jessica who is two, firstly you need to think about safety and comfort, secondly somewhere where there is a good chance of catching a fish.
I often used to take the kids up the river wear ie the golden lion where it is safely railed off and you can get away with using really light gear so the bairn can maybe have a go at reeling in.
Also a beach mark is a good idea used to take my boy to a small beach to the right of the cannon at shields, but i suppose there are numerous beaches between sunderland and shields you could do the same, the benefits of the beach is that if you are not having much action on the rod,the little one can occupy her time collecting stones and shells etc.
Also take the kids fishing for trout up at derwent quite regular, which is an excellent way to start kids fishing with the light gear and a good day out.
Whatever area you choose to fish think of these words before you go and they may help in your preperation.
DAD I AM COLD
DAD I AM BORED
DAD I AM HUNGRY
DAD I NEED AWEE
DAD I NEED A POO:o:o IT HAPPENS;);)

Hope this helps, enjoy your fishing with the bairn:):)

Used to take mine places like Blyth or Amble harbour where they can just drop a line down the side, tends to be short trips because they soon get bored unless there's plenty of small fish to catch. De-barb the hooks though to make sure you can release easily.

Scaley has got it spot on there, took one of mine when he was nine to saltburn pier(nice n safe)had to leave after about an hour, any passing boats must have thought it was a bloody lighthouse,he got bored and started flashing a torch everywhere.:o:o

Cheers for the advice!

I might take her down to the walkway for a few hours,
I reckon your definately right about the DAD I NEED.... bits aswell

We'll see how it goes ;)

Walkway is as good a bet as any but if she gets bored, as will happen, just move across onto the little beach. She can play in the sand as well as a having a good chance of a flatty or two. Also got the Littlehaven hotel right behind you in case there's a shout for the loo.
