Mint but gutted

Just for the record I had 27 fish or so in last years club season. Three were whiting which were killed. Two possibly three were flats released alive after weigh in. The rest were cod. I didn't weigh in any pollack or wrasse and wouldn't I would look pretty daft sprouting off then doing the same. That's my choice as an angler just as its the same to take em if they are legal size. Never once did I say the young lads were in the wrong I just said it was sad. Maybe one day they'll get a kick out of returning fish maybe not that's not my decision. But I hear it every year " there's no bloody fish" and it can't all be blamed on trawlers we all take fish so were All responsible. I think people got the impression that I kill pollack/ wrasse only in comps I don't kill them full stop.

Pollock and Wrasse are an abundant species on our coastlines, there is a reason for this. IGNORANT people like you who think the only edible white fish in the sea is cod, this is why cod stocks were so depleted the last 30 odd years.

So its fine for the shore angler like yourself to take 21 cod (a depleted species only just starting to recover from overfishing) for a competition, even though you don't eat it. But it is not alright (its sad, your words) to take a few pollock (a very nice eating fish and in abundance in the sea) for the table, unreal mate.

90% of this forum must be ignorant then eh. Maybe I'm wrong it's just I recognise pollack n wrasse as a sporting fish up places like the mull and at abbs. And I also put a lot of cod back. To try and balance things out a drop in the ocean I'm sure but at least I'm trying

My family eat it and none of it gets wasted. So what do you fish for then ?

I'm a pleasure angler, I fish for the fun of it, if I catch a few sizable fish I'll take a few of them for the table. I would never call a man who takes flounder for his table, even though I wouldn't take it, because that would make me a hypocrite for taking whatever I take regardless of species, do you get me.

Oh no, a pollock was eaten. Its so sad...think about conservation....I cant beleive what im reading. Its no wonder there's not many catch reports making it on here these days.

I was very careful not to call anyone or point the finger I only said it was sad to see half a dozen killed. Do you get me or can you not read back through posts

I can read posts yes, I never said you pointed a finger or called anyone, I called you an ignorant hypocrite and you proved my point.

My Missus and ten year old son like cod bites. I have some fillets left in freezer from the winter. Therefore it would be shear greed to take anymore just to sit there. When they are gone it'll be winter again and I'll keep some more. But it's not unusual in any club to give ya catch away to people that do eat them. By returning as many fish as I can I am at least counter balancing what I kill in thd winter. If them pollack were cod then I can see why keeping them. But pollack and wrasse throughout the country aren't really seem as a table fish. That's not to say people don't like to eat em, I don't like marmite or garlic sauce. And I can't chastise people who do kill em. I just think its a shame.

Your right Bout the wrasse not seen as a table fish but pollack definitely is, look in the supermarkets, quite a lot of the fish packaged frozen fish and breaded fish is now pollack

I dont have a dig at ya i stood up for ya the other day about ya spelling all am saying is there must have been a nick in the line or a week point for it to snap you dont get 25lb plus fish on a float over clean ground

doesn't take a 25lb fish to break 30lb line, even if its brand new,the knott will give well before that, ive seen tests on line and 30lb line with a simple blood knott snapped at 8lb.

eh but your happy to kill fish for a comp on a hope that someone eats them but lads cant take fish there actually going to eat?pollock is not a table fish? I bet 50 percent of fish fingers are pollack and other white fish rather than cod. The lads said there are eating there catch. Not killing them for fun like you do in your comps
ive seen some of the fish kept and weighed in at comps and you wouldn't get a fish bite off them, thats a waste,7oz whiting,6oz dab, ridiculous, comp anglers havnt got a say when it comes to keeping fish, they say the pensioners are waiting with their carrirer bags to eat them, they l only need money bags for some of the fish, lol

You put a lot of time effort and money into fishing if a fish is legal size and you are going to eat it great you have a end product if you are trophy hunting or competition fishing for points catch and release is the way to go and a lot of people do like pollock I know from the amount of requests l used to get when I took the boat out at the MOG I only kept fish that would not survive as I personally prefer cod :)

spot on mate,totally agree

I once went to the supermarket with a friend called Colin... does that count? :D

Its true though... pretty much all frozen fish in batter or breadcrumbs is Pollock. Unless it states cod and haddock then "white fiish" is normally Pollock and it tastes absoloutly fine. People have this thing about Cod but to me its pretty tasteless.... years of cultural ingraining that you must have cod.... Pollock can be just as good and they are certainly more plentiful.

I personally put back virtually every fish I catch. Tend only to keep large whiting which are found in large numbers and my brother loves to eat! Whilst I put back my catch I also accept that anyone who chooses to keep a sized fish has that right to do it. So long as they don't waste it then I don't have a massive issue with it, although it does keep me happy to see em going back.... well done on the catches lads.
