Angling: Boat sport sees big improvement May 20 2004

By Sam Harris, The Evening Chronicle

Boat fishing has seen a vast improvement over previous weeks - there has even been a few mackerel taken.

The main species has been cod but there have also been ling, whiting, coalfish, a few haddock and even the odd catfish.

Some boats, particularly out of the Tees, report a lot of octopus being taken.

A variety of artificials and fresh baits have all taken fish such as Hoki\'s, daylights, feathers, plastic squid, Jiggers all either baited or unbaited with mackerel strip, rag, lug, squid, mussel - in fact everything is working.

The majority of cod taken are averaging around 3-5lb, although there have been better fish taken.

The Tyne private boat Slinky Kate had a good number of cod, best 8lb. The Gypsy, also out of the Tyne, had a good catch with Micky Thompson taking the best fish, a cod of 17lb.

Davy Bolam\'s boat, the Balansee, out of the Royal Quays, North Shields, had 65 fish aboard, best 20lb. The Sunderland charter boat Delta Barbara had cod to 9lb and a few ling with the best catches and fish being taken on flowing traces with crab or rag.

A Seaham boat well offshore wreck fishing had a good catch with Seaham tackle dealer Norman Conn landing the best fish, a cod of 11lb, taken on a jigger. Norman tells me that they also had quite a number of fish between 8-10lb.

The Hartlepool boat Baccanalian had cod to 9lb and one of the party aboard, Fred Allerday, hooked a ling of 18lb on mackerel strip.

The Esk Star, also out of Hartlepool, caught a cod of 25lb from a wreck while the Jeronimo, also from the Tees, had ling to 11lb and cod to 16lb, also pollock to 8lb.

The majority of fish seem to be within one to three miles offshore but I have been asked by a number of charter boat skippers not to be too specific with the details of where fish were taken. Apparently trawlers and Seine netters read this column and go to the areas which I mention!

Well done (Stormin)Norman....

I don\'t know where Sam Harris gets his info. from (Iraqi Minister for Info maybe ??) but all the time I\'ve fished with Dave Bolam his boat has been called the Volante, (not Balansee) and we fish out of Sunderland, (not Royal Quays). Never mind.........Dave will be pleased!!

I also noticed that Jack Melton in the Sunderland Echo said last night that he was lacking reports for his column from Sunderland skippers.......he thought it maybe a secret society!!!

I\'ve read his column for some time and have never seen any contact details as to how to contact him with reports....anyone any ideas?

Cheers,
Jeff

Lol @ Normans\' mention (Norman knows what I mean) :o ;)

Also even BIGGER LOLLOLLOL at the wrong boat name / marina and the Iraqi Information Minister remark (in Jeffs post).

Those who helped organise last years comp will not be surprised to see that the quality of information provided from certain quarters hasn\'t improved ..........lol :D :exclam:
