Mullet

Many many years ago as a kid i fondly remember a holiday in the canaries where I spent most of my time trying to catch mullet that were acting like the shyest fish ever, they spooked so easy and seemed to have a sixth sense when it came to ignoring my hook, but scoffing all the bread i chucked in to attract them. I did eventually get one around a pound and a half and was dead chuffed at finally outwitting a fish :red:

Anyway I am going to be spending quite a bit of time around Warkworth this year and as well as trying to bag my first ever Turbot I was wondering if anyone has ever seen or heard of any mullet in the coquet eastury / Marina area ? I would love another chance to catch one and hope someone on here can let me know if there are any about.

Cheers

Jonny:D

There were quite a few Mullet in Sunderland marina last season so cannot see any reason why there shouldn't be Mullet in other North East marinas.

mullet?.

mullet?.

Many yrs ago :(we used to catch mullet on the powerstation outfall pipe at cambois along with decent bass:o.My biggest mullet was over 3lb but much bigger ones were in the fairly large shoals.Never heard of any caught ,this way for years:(

Never known of any in the harbour/marina at Amble, but it looks the kind of place where they should be.
I'll have to check out these gullies around Craster then !

Is Sunderland Marina accessible for fishing? Mullet are great fun to fish for if extremely frustrating, I'd love to find somewhere up here where they were present in numbers to make them worth targetting.

Theres loadsa ideal looking places for mullet up this way, but a have never seen any:confused: but no one fishes for them.

would be great if we could fish for mullet on our coast:D

Thanks for the feeback :) The last and only one I ever caught put up a decent fight on light gear and was probably as much fun to catch as a mackerel. Was hoping someone with a boat at Amble marina may have spotted some.

I will be looking for them this summer and look forward to posting a catch report if successful.

Cheers

Jonny :)

I haven't seen a mullet in Amble Marina in the few years I have had a boat in there, the only fish in there are flatties and Salmon/Sea trout.
For mullet you will have to try either budle bay or holy island. These two places are the only places I have seen mullet regularly when I have been out fishing, I still couldn't catch one though! I saw one lad get a few at Holy Island on a mepps spinner with small rag on the trebbles.

Good Luck,

Graham.

thanks again for all the replies it is appreciated :)

Just got a caravan at Warkworth so was looking for new species to target on the doorstep. Might still have a go and see if I can find any, you never really know until you try.

Anyway really loking forward to trying for Turbot off the beach and trying out some of the rock marks nearby.

Thanks

Jonny

Turbot

Caught small turbot each time I fished duridge bay last year, only small ones, but it's a start for you. Got them on the top hook of a two hook flapper, on macky strip. Was in the warmer weather tho, starting about beginning of June. Hope this helps.

There were big shoals of mullet up at Torness power station last summer, good fish in the 6/7lb class. We didnt really target them but they were there in good numbers:)
If you go up watch out for the Chinese, they fish for the restaurants and are quite,,,,,......erm competative:o

3 years ago i was rock pooling with my nephews at Seaton Slouce we ended up walking round to the harbor and i seen loads of razor fish shells i thought i would take my socks and shoes off and have a walk in just to see if any of them had razor fish in them but they didn't. The water erupted beside me and i got quite a fright it was a mullet of about 3lb and i noticed loads of weird marks in the mud sure they were off the mullet scouring the bottom with there lips never seen anyone fishing for them.

Cheers for the tips

seen a few reports concerning Turbot over the last year, including Warkworth beach, but there seems to be very little on this site about Mullet except for some foreign holiday experiences. I reckon they would be a real sporty fish on light tackle :D

I can honestly say that until reading this thread I've never seen or even heard of any mullet being caught around here. I've always associated them with the south. Can anyone tell me if their any good to eat?
