My Bloody Anchor

I’ve noticed that fishing at anchor is more productive than drift fishing at this time of year. The two drawback of fishing like this are that I’d need to haul back up a heavy anchor, and that fishing rough ground, it’s quite likely to get permanently stuck, an expensive problem. So, this afternoon I helped the little un weld up some rebar into a simple grapnel and lashed it to an old length of rope salvaged from Whitley beach. Total cost is about a tenner for an anchor that should bend out of snags and if I cannot move it I’ll lose less than the cost of a few bags of worms.

My welding won’t win any apprenticeships but is strong enough, and with a lot of help from the angle grinder has cleaned up OK. Unfortunately that’s when the problem started, swapping with the grinder, I clipped my finger and ground a groove through the welder’s glove and my finger inside it. I dripped my way into the kitchen, where the resident nurse recommended stiches and eldest son offered to do them. He cannot even stich up a button so we taped it back together, still leaking while I finished the job one-handed.

What is it about NESA and hand injuries? Duncan and Scotty can I join the club?

Here’s what all the fuss was about, I hope it’s worth it.

:D:D:Dwelcome:D:D:D get well soon
grinders dont cut flesh they tear it,and deposit loads of dirt, you may need to get it done at hospital:(:(

Anchor looks spot on Kev :) Arthur is the master of anchor makers, he made me one a few years back....but i lost it..:(

Hope the finger heals quick so you can hoist that anchor.....i'm covered in grinder grooves, main place for me is my knees....:(:D

You need to use an anchor thats got a rotten bottom [cable ties work atreat]
If your anchor gets stuck you pull untill they snap and the anchor comes up backwards.
An anchor retreval buoy is a good investment, saves pulling the pluck out of your arms
Look on ebay

Big tip Kev, DON'T FORGET TO TIE IT ON:red: Nice job, but if you don't use it on the boat it'll make a nice hat stand:D. You must of used a few welding rods on it:eek: To avoid future injuries, I would skip cleaning and painting it as i will probably chip of once bouncing along the hard ground.

Thanks for the tip Arthur, I wouldn’t be daft enough to chuck the anchor over the side without tying it on – I learned that lesson with a drogue :(
I must have used eight or ten 2mm rods with some help from my little ‘n, Mark. Painting was to stop or reduce the rust and keep the boat clean.

Endeavour, we welded a lug onto the bottom of the shank to shackle the rope to and cable-tied the rope to the ring at the top as a trip. It worked OK today without the need for any chain.

Erm..........er..........well, some people don't ....em..... check in their, shall we say, excitement to get the anchor over and start fishing.:confused::red::red::red:

I am the same as you Kev, i have dropped anchor 6 times in 6 years now and lost one and got stuck twice but got it back after a struggle....i never learned even the hard way to set up a "quick release" system for it so it comes up backwards.

Mind i dont like fishing at anchor but it has to be said it produces fish and can be so chilled out ona nice day rather than drifting marks a couple of mtrs wide/long.
