the price of gps systems has come down massively this year... whats best?? hard to say. I've had garmin, lowrance, navman and magellan systems, and have all been very reliable. what ultimately makes the difference is the charts that you buy to use on them, but even the difference in these is not as great as it once was.

for boat anglers, many of the features of modern plotters never really get a look in, we just point em at where we want to go, and when we've done there, we point em somewhere else.

If you're budget runs to it, I'd say go for a colour one, I'd always had black and white plotters till this year and its much nicer/clearer in colour, but no more efficient.

I bought a cobra plotter earlier this year with the full UK and Ireland chart card, annd really like it. has some neat features the others don't have.

but you can now get black and white plotters upwards of £150 where you'd be paying 500 plus just a few years back

I have to echo what mark has said . The gps prices have fallen and entry level units are good value. If the budget runs to it get a plotter rather than a GPS...a GPS just shows a blank screen and you have to put your target marks in . A plotter overlays that screen with a map.

I would not recommend a combined gps and fishfinder as if one breaks you have lost everything. I use a navman 128 and it does evrything I would expect from a gps. acurate and fast lockon even when you move long distances with it switched off.

This summer will probably see me upgrade to a plotter as it would be nice to be able target a depth region rather than a particular mark, but I have no plans as to which one to get.

Take a look at www.jkmax.co.uk as I cant fault him for his customer service. I enquired about a fish finder and he sent me one on next day am delivery to try ...If I like it pay me if not send it back. I cant fault that .

Cheers
Dave.

just got my new gaelforce marine catalogues this morning, they are now doing navman plotters at an unbelievable 159 quid! and there's an offer on for a chart pack to go with them, plotter and chart cartridge for £219. the plotter alon was £279 a month ago. The offer's not on their site, so would be worth ringing them
