Alarm at 3am picked my mated up and headed to the pier , It was a planned assault on mackerel , not huge numbers but just to catch as my friend is new to sea fishing and he has stuck through the cold of jan feb march fishing with me . This was going to be a fun session for his first time for mackie .
We climbed round the gate and from then on i was gutted. I never thought i would see the day where i would be ashamed to be a fisherman . I have fished for over 30 years and i have never seen such a disgusting sight in all my life . I wont describe it as you all know what the pier looks like at this time of year .
I had to put rubbish in the bin to find a space to fish ! I felt embarrassed when the poor chap came up the pier picking litter , I felt I had to say sorry for the mess and actually found myself saying it was not mine . Was so sick to the stomach to take a friend for their first experience and they get this as a first impression .
Fishing wise , at 5am the water boiled and on spinners we took home 5 , great fishing .
What can be done about the idiots ?? I bet as much rubbish went in the sea to wash up on the blue flag beach !!
day tickets ? pier rod licence ? During the summer this would pay for permanent staff to patrol the pier .
Or make it club only may
ranting now really ****ed off

welldone on the sesion roker pier the same on saturday makki flapping about on the concrete rubbish cans and guts all over i talk to alot of tourists or just people going for a stroll and i always seem to apologise for other peoples mess

Agree with you 100%. Disgrace. Would love something done about it. Can't see the patrolling staff being any good as the amount of grief they'd get from these "anglers" wouldn't be worth the pay check. However if they do ever advertise these jobs ill put my name straight forward ! Couldn't think of nowt better in this weather ! Take care, pal.

It not just the piers !!! to good fresh water lakes (rightly or wrongly that are free to fish )the lakeside and the quarry are also being ruined by pot smoking larger drinkers that only fish when the sun is out . What do we do when its all ruined ???????

Shields pier has always been like that for the last 15 years I've been fishing, but nothing ever gets done about it. It'll be like that next year and the year after till something comes into affect or it gets closed altogether to anglers. Well done on the session.

it's shocking

it's shocking

There are not many things you can enjoy for free these days, but fishing and walking in the country are free to anyone with a bit of equipment and a few quid for transport. The idiots who despoil these places don't realise that the inevitable result of their actions will be charging, more licenses and reduced recreational opportunities.
Land owners are already trying to keep the public off their land, and piers and beaches will be next unless this idiocy stops. People who leave rubbish on piers and beaches are almost inviting the authorities to deny public access.

I've been to Shields pier this evening and it wasn't too bad. It was busy but there wasn't the frenzy and drunken antics that there was at the weekend and the rubbish wasn't too bad.
Still no excuse for the rubbish that was there, how much do daylight packets weigh?
I was going to say take it home but hopefully I am preaching to the converted on here:cool:

We went to Granton Pier (Edinburgh) three years ago, couldn't believe the mess. We lasted 20 minutes and would never go back. At that time I used WSF, wrote a report suggesting the Council should close the breakwater for a couple of months and make public why. I got absolutely slated by everyone on there and ended up leaving the site totally disillusioned.

I do think that the vast majority of the mess makers are "mackie bashers" but a few are experienced anglers. I have seen anglers and even a charter boat "mate" chuck everything over the side.

Town centres on a Sat/Sun morning are a disgrace too with Indian, Chinese and Kebab rubbish everywhere and not an angler in sight! Just a total lack of respect for people's surroundings. Wish I knew the answer.

Last year I saw two Father's on Blairmore Pier fishing while very drunk and one of the Mother's was also, cans of Super Lager lying all over the pier, swearing and shouting, we left immediately. They had three kids under eight years old with them. So what do the kids learn from that? Not how to behave when they get older that's for sure!

Who knows, but it makes me very sad. :(:(

Should take them to sea with all their drink and let them get pi--ed and suffer for 8 hrs. Put them of fishing for life !!!!!! Happy days.

i'd be happy to pay a fee to get on the piers if it means they're clean and people drinking or rubbish chuckers are kicked off like.

It will only stop when there is are no stocks of "macky" left for them to catch.

I even took home rubbish from a club that was fishing Newton recently so it comes from all types unfortunately.

I don't know the answer to this rubbish problem but it's certainly not only the summer months you see mess on the piers I have see loads of rubbish scattered about in the depths of winter with not a chav in sight only :REAL: anglers so where did that rubbish come from, before we start pointing fingers at the fair weather anglers[who I do know contribute a great deal to the mess] we should get our own house in order.

I know what you mean , all those line clippings ,nests and bait wrappers mount up even during the winter . I think the rough weather during the winter hides a serious issue .
May be we need to increase awareness of the problem and get down there together with black bags ,be seen to be keeping our house in order .Then the powers that be may help with persistent offenders .

Ring the police and ask to speak to the neighbourhood inspector that is responsible for Roker ( or Shields) pier. Tell them about the littering and idiots and ask for a cso to atrol there. They will do it if they get a few complaints.

Just returned from an enjoyable session at the above, yes you've guessed the rubbish is unbelievable, only a matter of time before angling is banned here as well.
