Hi cocomonkey, Looks like there are a few of us all in the same boat (is that a pun?) in that we are new to boat fishing , in the sea at least! I've only been out a couple of times too , but from those experiences the advice I would give about lead weights is ........TAKE A LOT!!! First time out I seriously thought we were going to run out of either weights or rigs ... or both . Rough ground eats them up faster than any cod or ling will!
Take a good assortment of sizes too , when the tide starts running you need a heavier weight than when it's slack to get the hooks down where the fish are. (second time out the boat went about 5kts slower with all the lead we were carrying

)
One other thing I learned , keep hold of your rod

I took 2 rods with me second trip , one set up for mackerel , I laid it against the sideof the boat for a second whilst I did something else and next thing I knew it was away to Davy Jones locker

complete with abu multiplier , braid , lead and rig

.
Other than that ..... enjoy youself
