New to braid ! My fekkin Thumb.

firstly wellcome to nesa steve.sound like some boyo, lol.would of thought simplest answer would be use a level wind reel,if not a glove.even a bit innertube of a small bike, better again buy a bit thrink tupe.[DONT]heat it on your thumb 1st,possibly a bit copper pipe bigger than your thumb, then carefully finish heating on your thumb.hope this helps you out.reg.

You don't have to lay it back on the spool too evenly as you're not casting with it.
Just the odd side to side with your thumb should do.

welcome to the site.dont touch a level wind for boat, unless you want you thumb jammed in it.

your 624 if in decent cond.is a jolly good reel.

i have used braid on boat for some time now,and never had an issue,as said the line dosent need to be laid as it would for casting.

ps my paws are as soft as :question:

stick with the braid--guid luck

I favour a level wind for boat fishing but when I'm not using a level wind I find the line can be spread evenly by turning the rod handle clockwise / anti-clockwise when reeling in. That said, the Mitchell 624 has a very low spool ratio and as such the technique may not work as well as it does on a 5-1 or 6-1 reel.
Cannot fault the 624 in terms of reliability with it's brass / steel internals and metal spool but when wrecking in deeper water you've got to reel like crazy to get the gear up when the skipper toots the horn.

I agree with drifter on the rod turning, I sometimes help the line over a little with top of thumb but mainly just wind on an angle to right slightly then after a few minutes turn it to the left the line follows the turn ......

But I agree with Lingking on level winds , nasty place to get your thumb or finger stuck :)

Welcome to Site mate

I thumb the braid back onto the reel as I would with a shore reel (no level winds for me)

A bit like playing the guitar it's a matter of getting the skin used to it - any guitar player will tell you about the callouses and hard skin on the ends of their fingers :D

Good answer Tony. Maybe on the next Slinky vid, perhaps a few cords as yous are into the fish:cool:

you don't need to have it too neat on a boat just don't let it pile up all on one side. I've never had an issue with it. Just put a waterproof plaster on your thumb and give it he odd nudge.

Glove

Glove

Now then lads and lasses you OK.
As the title says I am new to braid.
I fished with it on Sunday just gone there on the Blueye 2 and it worked great after my fear about it digging in to itself and causing problems.
Anyways....Thumbing it back on to my Mitchell 624 was a bit over the top towards the end of the trip as my thumb is as saw as fekk....LOL
Maybe as it was new line or maybe its just like this and kills your thumb on the retrieve.
I do not know .
Good line does the job. But wrecks your thumb...LOL
I graft my hands every day so they are not silky soft but by fekk this braid knows how to get you.
Any advice on how to protect the thumb on retrieve...LOL ?
Or do I just shut up and hack it until my thumb likes braid.
Cheers Steve
go to a decorators merchant like Williams Sunderland get a pair of thin gloves great tight fitting for fishing

One thing you should consider is adding a mono shock leader. Braid will not stand up to too much abrasion particularly on wrecks but mono will. I use 50/60lb leader of about 3 rod lengths. There is a special knot to join them, you will find it somewhere on the net. Also be careful when using braid, especially when snagged , you shouldn't try to pull it off by hand as braid will cut like cheese wire. Use something like a baseball bat to wrap it around. They recommend turning the braid yearly but I don't bother, I should do really but have never had an issue.
