Newbie help

Hi all,

Just joined the forum so please be gentle. I'm based in Sunderland and looking to get back into fishing locally. I used to go quite a lot with my dad when I was a kid but that was a good 15-20 years ago so we might aswell just say I'm a total novice.

Looking for advice on the best way to get back into it? Haven't got a clue where to start so hoping you guys could give me pointers on the following:-

What kit to buy? - At first I don't want to spend a lot of money until I get a feel for what I'm doing. I was going to just buy one of those starter kits for around £20-£25. Are they worth it, even if I only get a few months use out of it?

Where to go? - We always used to fish under Wearmouth bridge on the city centre side. Is that still a decent spot? This was long before the Glass Centre was built, is it better over that side? Would Roker pier be best for starting out?

When to go? - Can only really fit it in at weekends. High or low tides?

Sorry for so many questions on my first post but looking to get out this weekend if possible

Cheers

No need to say sorry mate welcome that's what nesa for to help popel out new to fishing who now haw to fish ect but glass and rocker are two good spots am my from that end am from Newcastle but lods popel on ya who will help you out frome that way lyk a says welcome

wellcome to the site mate there are loads off great lads on here to help mate the glass center is ok and you dont lose very much gear good for flatfish and whities so its not a bad place to start off roker pier for mackeral and whities or even try the ratty (rathouse pier) which is at the river mouth befor the pier its ok to good luck and might see you out this weekend

Thanks for the welcome lads.

If I can get some gear sorted before the weekend I'll be heading down. Might try the Glass centre for starters. What bait should I be looking at for that area, ragworm? Whats the going rate for a bag of rag these days?

Thanks again

Hi welcome to nesa mate. There is quite a few people on here that live in Sunderland and willing to help you (me included ). So if you need any help with bait , rigs, ect just ask. I will be fishing this Sunday if you want to come and try your luck with the fish. You can use one of my rod + reels if you have not got one by then and I will supply the bait can't say better than that.

Thanks again for all the welcomes and offers of help fella's, much appreciated. I've now got myself a freebie rod sorted from a mate to get me started but no reel so will nip out tomorrow and have a look. Whilst I'm at it what size of weights, size hooks should I be looking for? What lb line?

Cheers

Hi mate now that's the million dollar question.
What can your rod take 4oz-6oz I'm thinking but you won't know until you try it.
Hooks I would say 1/0-2/0 Aberdeen .
Line 20lb main line and a shock leader ( 40lb for 4oz , 50lb for 5oz , 60lb for 6oz).
This is a good start for the river/pier .

Hi again lads. Got myself a cheap reel and some rigs sorted so looks like I'm pretty much ready to give it a go. Thinking about heading out one day over the weekend not sure which yet, but the weather forecast is looking pretty bad. Just wondering how much that affects the fishing, or oes it not make any difference? Will probs be on the river either at the glass centre or panns bank

Cheers

good luck m8 where ever u end up i will be on the pier tonight looking for the mackeral on the spinning rod

Thanks toonboy. I have some mackerel at home and was going to use strips as bait. Is this ok for in the river or more best for pier? Also have some mussel but it's frozen, is it any good or only good to use fresh?

both are good to use mate plenty of whiting and coalies getting caught on the mackeral as well as flounders you need elastic thread for the muscle just in case you didnt no m8
