well decided to fish the newbiggin comp to start the season off,got in from work just before 5am and headed up there for aroud 7.30 getting to the registration for 8 am.
after registering for the comp and pools etc i headed up to bog hall for a look and to try and decide on where to fish, which wasnt going to be easy without any crab.
after squeezing the car between the boulders i drove straight onto the beach where there was one other car there with four lads getting geared up.
there was still a great looking sea on with lynemouth beach looking just about fishable.the tide was still up a bit high to get onto bog hall rocks so waited for a bit by which stage around another 14 people turned up.there were lads lined up all the way along lynemouth beach too and a few to northern side of bog hall.
it was around 9.30 (an hour before the start of the comp so i decided that without crab i would be wasting my time fishing shoulder to shoulder on bog hall with the rest of the lads so i moved south a bit onto another rocky outcrop which i was informed is called "railway hole"
i got set up at the start of the rocks and followed the tide out.as the comp started i was able to wade a good distance over the rocks and get a decent cast out well over the breakers into what looked like deep water.
on reeling in there was a ledge around 40 yards out that had to be cleared with a fast retrieve.
on my second cast i hooked a codling around 1.5lb followed by a few missed bites and a lot of weed on the next few casts.the weed died off for an hour or so at low water then on the flood it was back but not in massive amounts and it was still easily fishable.
i managed another codling slightly bigger than the first on the flood and again missed a couple of bites, and that was it.
back at the weigh in a lad from sunderland had a good fish over 8lbs took at bog hall along with another to give him a bag around 9lbs 10.altho he had the heaviest fish of the day this was a heaviest bag comp and the winning bag easily won by a good margin.it was a 20lb bag with five or six fish two of them going to just over 6lbs caught from the private beach.there were a few other good bags weighed in around the 12lb mark consisting of mainly 2lbers and a lot of these bags were from the bog hall areas.my bag weighed 3lbs 3ozs and got me a pick of the prizes but there was nowt i fancied so i went for a case of bud
i was using mussel/razor/runnydown/squid and found mussel and razor to be getting plenty of bites.
all in all i really enjoyed fishing railway hole and for some reason although i got snagged up quite a bit i didnt lose any gear
not sure on the next trip out yet as lokking at the weather outside it looks like the start of summer :)

Nice report Col ,it's a canny shot around Lynemouth area ,remember if you've not got crab then clams and razor work well around there .

aye chris went over on bog hall and twisted his knee about two hours into the comp, but he carried on altho he couldnt cast that far, back at the weigh in he couldnt walk and had to hop up the stairs to claim his prize for heaviest fish, his knee was a canny size by then and to me looked like it might be broke, but he wouldnt go to the hospital till he got back to sunderland.
