a bass has just been wieghed in at seaham club at 5 lb 9 5/8 oz caught at seaham piertonight at about 6,30 caught on runny down mussel and squid .

Nice fish, i only had whiting there on monday night. There were a few on the south pier but not sure if they got owt cos i fished the 22 mark.

Few bass kiscking about at the moment, because of the netters i wotn put it on here but a beach not that far from us has produced bass in good numbers i.e 4-8 a trip in and around the 1/2 lb-3lb mark.

I am going fishing this afternoon but not targeting any real species, just a chuck and hope sesh today.

im Shaun from near Newark, notts; the lad who caught the bass. Fish around the seaham area every couple of weeks with my dad.

Was just fishing large cocktail baits in the hope of a cod, and fishing was really slow with only a few whiting and flatties when i got a slack liner. you can imagine what a shock it was when a bass surfaced. Fantastic!!

Had left my scales at home and camera in the car, so thanks to the club for use of theirs.

To thewestwind , this is only the second bass i have kept; both for the table/not for profit. All others have happily been returned. Im certainly no fishmonger but see little harm in retaining the odd fish now and again.

Welcome to NESA jonesy and well done with your fish mate. I agree, nowt the matter with keeping the odd one for the table. I have caught dozens over the years but have kept about four I think.

The biiggest one for me (and my first) was about three and a half pound, I caught three others that night that were all over the legal limit but they went back for another day.

Welcome to Nesa mate.

Jim.

thanks mate, will post a picture soon.
Every one ive spoken to says what fantastic fighters they are. Have to say mine fought more like a cod without the bumps. just solid resistance until it surfaced. in fact the previous one i had around the two pounds mark put up a bigger struggle.(perhaps due to the conditions ??) Just wondered was yours fought like?

I got a cracking fight off mine, luckily I was using a very light beach caster though.

I was fishing on Blyth pier one night and caught two Codling in consecutive chucks. The first one was six pound four and came in easily and was handballed up the pier without a problem. The second one fought like hell and I handed my rod to my mate so I could handball it up myself as I thought it was a monster. It was four pound lol, my mate and myself couldn't believe it. Some fish will fight like hell and others will come in easily.

KeithB caught a 25lb Cod from the boat and he said it had virtually no fight to it at all, yet we all have caught much smaller fish that have been good scrappers.

regards

Hey jonesey
hope you didn't take my comment the wrong way mate it certainly wasn't meant as a dig at you.
It's a personal thing as to whether you keep fish or return them.
Enjoy your fishing.

no probs 'thewestwind' mate; if im honest i probably did take it as a bit of a dig but i understand your point of view.
I fished chapel st leonards a couple of months ago for smooth hounds , which i think are generally considered great fighters and seem to have a bit of a cult following , a bit like bass. several anglers had travelled some way to catch and return these fish and like them all my fish were returned too. Then you talk to others who say you must be mad, they make fantastic eating ... so it really is a tricky argument and like you say all in the eyes of the beholder.

anyway, have now posted my photos in the gallery for anyone interested.
