No fish at Druridge. Is this is why?

Just as we were about to pack up at the end of our club comp at Druridge Bay on Sunday, with very little caught, we saw what could have been the reason for our lack of success. 150 yards off at the most, it motored all the way along the full length of the beach.
Amble boat "Sarah Louise". Probably catching pot bait.

Same on Cambois beach near the wansbeck no more than 200yds out, Definately towing. Flat toys for pot bait I recon

Its been happening off Hartlepool aswell. The holes we fish into at low have been getting towed over high.

Apparently they have been getting turbut. I tried fishing it a couple of times but only picked up small flounders and whiting.

They do the same in winter if theres reports of number of cod from there.

There's been a boat off Whitley beach every morning for the last few weeks- seen it dropping things off the back every 10 metres or so that looked about pot size. Wouldn't have thought it was putting that many pots though so was hoping it wasn't netting- any ideas?

Whitley Cullercoats Tynemouth

Whitley Cullercoats Tynemouth

Theres the boat does it every year not going mention names know who they are,its legal less than ten metre boat im led to believe, and their anglers alledgedly too when they feel like it.Net these beaches off at every oppotunity every winter as soon as fish appear, every year, jaw dropping the qualitity of fish they take at times, like a few 20lb+s.

Stood one Christmass holiday morning low water,6am fishing end of Slatey gut, and he was level with me looking south down tynemouth longsands, dropping his gill nets.So l moved to north side of Cullercoats harbour on end of skeers, and he come running the full length in front of me off where l was, across the front of the warriors, crab hill, crawlies and the pipe droppimg his Nets, not pots l could see quite clearly,in fact he was that close l could hear bits of their conversation.

A 100 yard chuck would seen you into his wheel house.Packed up walked along Whitley prom to Rex beside my flat and could see he s doing Whitley beach as well by now,end to end.I was told in his defence as a excuse for this netter, Oh but he does stagger his nets at different distances out from the beach with gaps between, really l thought was speechless and that was in the tackle shop in Whitley.

Must be a respected local lad if they were defending him.

Aye!,but he does it to make a living.
Not for fun like shore anglers.
Theres only about 5% of boats fishing off our coast now, compaired to what there was 20 years ago. With the price of fuel and all the new regs its not worth there effort to fish off here now....

Exactly never said different l said how he went about it.

Totally agree mate the mans entitled to make his differcult honest living, the seas are raped now and have been for years by the blind greed of big commercial operators from all over the world, hence lack of fish everywhere, and now total lack of local fish catching trawlers.Happy days less trawlers, maybe a few more fish for me to catch and return while out doing my little hobbie.

Agree 100% how many other people have lost there jobs to the climate? It's not just fisherman do people really think trawler men are bothered about providing fish to people? No they care about the money simple as that, they act and speak like there doing us a favour by catching fish haha makes me laugh, they moan there is no money in it anymore, then do what everyone else does if your jobs not making money stop complaining and do something that does make money. However all these lads who were making fortunes by getting huge amounts of fish are now paying there price for there greed.

I very much doubt they would waste a lot of money on fuel to tow for just pot bait.

It's a trawler, not a potting boat, so he'll be selling them to the many potters based in Amble. Pot bait doesn't come cheap.

Well if there's no fish to catch, I like many others will not be buying any more gear/bait from local tackle shops, so what about their livelihoods? Every time I go in, the shops are nearly always empty.
Hard times for everyone.:(

I've witnessed possibly the same boat or a another doing the same along the durridge/cresswell/lynemouth coast and the fishing along there was useless for weeks after. Don't know much about the ways of the commercial guys but they've got the rest of the sea to fish, whilst the shore fishermen have only 150 yards out from the beach. Agree with previous posts bad practice in years gone by, over competition from 'foreign' boats and over fishing. Desperate times!
