Just received conformation that the seaham town council open has been scrapped .Due to council cuts poor turnouts for the last few years so it's been binned.

most councils have been cut back to the bone with funding more so the small councils up in the north. its a shame that they have had to end a long standing event.
this country is in a hell of a state cant see it is going to get any better in the future.

Yes this is typical run of the mill but they will waste thousands on fire work displays ,flower arrangements,etc,etc, 30 years this comp has been ran but if its not working then that's that

total agree Geordie if they can find money for fireworks and flower tubs then something is wrong if they cant sponsor the event that has been part of seaham for 30years.
seaham angling club has also been going a very long time with a good membership. and attracts fishermen into seaham for the competition.
possible there are no council members that go sea fishing or members of seaham club that could object the decision.

80 odd fished in 2014. 80 odd fished in 2013. We get more than that every fortnight for club matches. There will have been more people from outside Seaham queing up for ice cream at Lickety Splits than fished this comp despite it being early December.

The fireworks bring a lot of people into town and a fair proportion of them will spend money in the bars and bistros along North Terrace. The flower beds? Again, there is an increasing number of people coming into Seaham to walk along the beach, look at Tommy, go down to the marina and cafe and a lot of these will spend money in the other local bars and bistros. If the place looks nice, they come back. If it looks like a crap-hole, they won't.

I'll give good odds that not a single entrant to the STC spent more in Seaham on the day than buying a coffee in the club hut. Tradition is nice, but you can't blame the council for priotritising spending on areas that might bring money into the town instead of on a fishing competition that is no longer supported by the angling community
