North east fishing Boats

Did anyone else see the 5pm itv news on Wed?

I know us anglers dont see eye to eye with the fishing fleet but what the goverment are trying to make them live on is shocking. I mean it is like one of our bosses turning around and saying from now on you can only work 2 days a week and if you leave us you will lose your pension and redundant money.

I think the goverment should at least offer them a way out by buying them out .
I think it is great that they are (goverment) at last takign some kind of action but you have to feel its harsh for the fleet lads.

I cant remember what they said they could catch but it was something like 2 boxes of cod per month and 2t of white fish.

Dont want this thread to turn into anything long and nasty but even us hardcore anglers have to stand back and say they are getting a bad deal at the moment, even if alot of us think it is self inflicted from the past, it is still very harsh.

if theres no work (fish to catch) , is there any choice ?
its happened to me before and many others id imagine.
its a hard life sometimes.
tough titties.

fishing industry on way out, coal. iron and steel industry gone. farming industry doing great even though they produce too much, have to give stock away, prices they get for produce poor, answer where do all the subsidies go, nice one Maggie.

No sympathy whatsoever.
They've taken taken taken for years and done nothing at all to conserve stocks.
When I say they've put nothing back don't take that too literally after all they do put plenty of dead and dying undersize fish back.

I think its a disgrace i work in the fishing industry dealing with scallops and prawns. If these boats dont go to sea it isnt just the fishermen who lose money there are thousands of people like me who dont get paid either. People dont realise how many people will suffer.

If Scientists are saying IT HAS TO STOP OR THERE'LL BE NOWT LEFT then what is there to argue about. Of course the commercials will have a terrible time and that is bloody awful for them, their families and those people who rely on the industry. But the science says DO SOMETHING NOW OR FACE TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF STOCKS.

It has already happened off Newfoundland as everyone knows. What else can the government do?

The point the fishermen are trying to make is that the the whiting and plaice ect are a buy catch most of the fishing fleet on the north east coast target PRAWNS.When they go to the fishing grounds there will always be round fish as well as prawns so they are powerless in avoiding catching them. But the prawn season is over in the north sea it will start again in late september so the boats target fish for these months in between as thats all there is to catch

But the point is they cannot keep on simply taking till the sea is barren.
There has to be action to preserve what is left and help to restock for both the hobby angler and the trawlers.
If they do not see that and acceppt it then it is a waste of time debating the point.
If that means that there are fewer boats licensed, reduced seasons and limits on nets sizes etc then so be it.
It may nean that fish become a premium item and only a few boats earn a living.
Trawlermen do noy have a automatic right to make a living,as has been said, mining, ship building and many other industries and jobs have gone.
Maybe it is time that some trawlermen look at another scource of income.
As to the money the have invested in boats and equipment?
Well they are businessman,i don't see people wanting EVERY local business given a hand out simply because there business has gone broke.

Is the fishing industary not just like any other?? when there is no work there is pay offs! do we think there will be more jobs lost in the north east due to the fishing restrictions than there was when they closed the pits!! "I dont think so". The fact of the matter is jobs wil be lost and like everyone else out there who has ever lost a job there is only 2 options retire or retrain. Dont get me wrong i feel for them but it is not the end of the world. I do think they should be given some help with Redundancys and pention, i meen if they can afford to bail Northern Rock they can affford to do that at least.

the reason i feel for these fishermen is because it is the under 10 metre boats that are getting penalised. These boats are low powered and not suitable for rough seas so there is a limit to the days they can get to sea and to the distance they can go out to sea.The big boats ie the twin rig and pair trawlers are still able to go and rape the sea bed they can also fish in all weather they are the ones doing the damage. Most of these boats are also owned by large companys not like the small ones who are owned by average joe who has had to work his b*****ks off to pay for his boat.

Yeah sad,but no different to corner shops being shut down by supermarkets opening.
Sad but that business, things move on.
I see no need to assume that something "will be done" by the government or anyone else.
Get a group of the owners of the smaller boats, sell them, pool the money and buy a bigger boats as a co-op.
Or invest in another business.
Just some ideas, not sure if they are workable but if they do not move on and adapt they will go bust.
Sad but,as i have said, thats life in business.

it,s like a farmer chopping down all his apple trees in the orchard, because its easy and faster to pick them off the ground ,then complaining the next year that there is no apples

Thats spot on Paul.

If a business cant survive then it goes to the wall, there are many people who loose their jobs in pretty much the same way these fishermen face loosing theirs.
Its sad but unfortunately its the way of the world, survival of the fittest.

The qoutas the under ten metre boats have are ridiculous. do the government not realise the fish they are forcing them to throw back are alredy knackered.:(

I have a few mates on trawlers i know two boats out the other day had to throw back 7 boxes of cod between them and they didnt even catch enough prawn to pay for the overpriced bloody diesel. Diesel in amble marina has just jumped from 55p a litre to 75p a litre. its an absoloute disgrace:mad:
