Old blyth pier

Just wondered how many people on here remember blyth pier before it was cut in half and when it happened. I think it was around 20 years ago. I served my time on the pier as a kid and went there one day, many years later, to find it had gone. At one time it was similar to walking to the end of shields and I think there used to be a lighthouse on the end of it.

Blyth South Pier (the wooden pier) has always been the length that it is now; but you are right; there used to be a small automatic light on the square end. What year it was removed I don't know, maybe someone will remember and chip in with that information.

One piece of useless information that people may find interesting is something that I found out in Blyth library one day; the original plan when they were planning on building the pier was to start it at around where Stubley's is now, near the bandstand, and bring it right across to end where it does now; creating a massive tidal marina. But financial restraints meant that they had to make it shorter, so it was built as it stands now.

Just sayin' like!

it was cut in half by a boat that slightly misjudged the harbour entrance, but it was repaired, can't remeber the year though, certainly a lot more than twenty, would asy thirty to thirty five years ago.

Thats great info man....And some size pier it would have been. Hey the chavs would have 2 times the safety rings to steal hahah.

I do remember as a teenager (late 70"s) that it was gated just past the bend - large chunks were missing between the gate and the end, which had a stumpy light on it. Can't remember how long the gate was there, and if that was the damage caused by the collision?

Gary :)

OK, that clears it up for me. Must have been an illusion stamped in my mind from childhood. Still have difficulty believing it though. Thanks for the feedback.

Blyth Pier.

Blyth Pier.

As Alan says, it was more like 30/35 years ago when it was cut in half. I was on there when it happened. There was a huge sea running from the north at the time and a German coaster was trying to get into the harbour. Watching him come towards us we saw him being picked up by a huge wave which took him sideways across the harbour entrance. The next thing we knew he was coming straight for us, we didn't bother reeling in, we just grabbed our rods and tackle boxes and ran like hell. He cut the pier clean in half and it was closed for months.

I have lived in Blyth for all of my 51 years; apart from when I was in the navy between 1976 and 1982. I spent most of that time abroad; it must have happened some time during that period otherwise I would have known about it. Judging by what Alan and Sam have said, 30-35 years ago, that would fit.

Sam; I bet you nearly cacked yourself when you saw that ship coming at the pier; Lol

Brave man mate, I think I would have left the rod!
Like I said earlier, Alan's attached plan shows the pier as it is now plus at the end it chucks a right. That's the bit I thought used to be there, but it was a long time ago and others say it's the same now as it's always been so that's it.

Blyth Pier.

Put it this way I wasn't able to wear those underpants again. Going back for our sinkers and hooks were the last things on our minds, we cut our lines while we were running. The annoying thing was, we were catching fish, we all left some decent fish lying on the pier, I know I left 3 codling all about 4 or 5 lbs. apiece.

g.ordon; what you are seeing on Alan's plan and thinking is the pier "chucking a right" is actually text which says "Lighthouse". Look at the end of Cambois pier on the same plan; the same text appears there.

Ok mate, need new glasses, as I said earlier must have been a childhood illusion stamped in the mind.

i've fish blyth pier from a kid 30+ yrs back, dont know about b-ing cut in half but remember the gate at the bend & the end. after the gate there was a big section of the pier took out 2 stop people getting across 2 the crane that was there hammering the big steel supports in, the thing is we still got over because of the thick elec cable running the little lighthouse on the end.
also used 2 b a old pier inbetween the north & south pier, the hollow stone pier we used 2 call the (fishermans graveyard) as kids because if u climbed inside & walked along under the coast guards building there were square stones inbedded in concrete & just looks like a grave yard.
anyway this pier was the start of the old pier i was told with the rocks running out 2 the can with the lights on it known as the (peeping toms rocks)
any 1 else know of this other little pier?

all I can remember is the small stone Jetty as it is now, fished there with my grandfather and uncles when I was just a young un, Arthur (canman) might know a bit more he was born and lived nearby, mind he couldn't remember the old shrimp huts, used to be a cafe at one time.

I think there is a picture on the back of the tide tables booklet sold by Sports and Leisure in Blyth that show a lighthouse at the end of Blyth pier.
Not sure if the light has gone or the pier part
