Only 100 cod left in the North Sea

If someone said to me you cant keep anything but you can still fish and that the sea would not be trawled for 10 years but the people making a living from it would b esupported then i would be 100% for a full ban.

It's all madness! You have the government employing scientists to set the maximum sustainable quotas followed by MP's campaigning to raise quotas for their fisherman constituents to make a living so the quota's set by the scientists get ignored! What's the point in employing the scientists in the first place if they don't take any of their advice/ recommendations?
The biggest gripe I have is that all commercial licences were given originally for free, how can there now in some cases be millions of pounds of value attached to a licence that was given for free? if a young lad wants to go to sea to fish to earn a living, he must buy a boat, gear, fair enough but surely the licence should be applied for and not bought at great cost for someone's gain who initially got it for free?
Another thing is that a lot of these licences were sold to the bloody Spanish!( by british fishermen!!!)The fish caught in our waters disappear straight into the back of a lorry off to La Coruna!
Slipper skippers who lease their quota also don't help! Sitting at home reaping the rewards!
Until we get out of the CFP and our countries leaders grow some balls/ develop a spine it's a downward spiral to catastrophe.

Graham.

Suppose they proposed a ban on all fishing Richy, commercial and recreational to give the stocks a chance to recover completely unhindered , even catch and release, would you still be in favour?

I would rather not lose my sport BUT i woudl also like the chance to give my kids the chance of fishing in the north sea and catching soemthing...so it short i be upset but would understand

i don't think we'll see any kind of ban, commercial quota reductions maybe,

but this government and most likely the next one's too will not make these tough decisions, they daren't... they like to be popular..reduce this a bit and that a bit, but that's all

imagine if you could make it easy....

ban all foreign commercial boats from our waters...

reduce quota's dramatically, but give financial aid to the fishermen

somehow monitor the private boats catches to sensible amounts
( which really we do )

stop overseas aid to countries that don't need it and use the cash saved to pay for it..

bingo...:D

roll on 2023....big cod all over...:D

If everyone thought like that there wouldn't be a problem Richy  , unfortunately that's highly unlikely , there will be plenty who refuse to accept the situation and plenty more who would seek to turn it to their benefit.
I think along the same lines as you do, I'd hate to lose my sport , at my age a ten year ban might mean I'd never fish again , but I'd do it if it meant a return to healthy fish stocks that could be maintained for future generations.
What I would baulk at, and what would most likely happen would be restrictions with exceptions , if I was told I couldn't fish the North Sea any more to preserve fish stocks but others were allowed to carry on fishing for one reason or another , I'd be a lot less keen on the idea.
