After blanking again and getting texts from my brother and his mate Neil about all the fish he was catching,I decided to have a trip out.We met up at Ipswich after a 4.5 hour drive, then went on to Orford. The village is only small and doesn't even have a shop but it does have a quay where the (pre booked )boat ferries you across to the island. The island is in fact a spit of land or rather shingle that runs about 10 miles south of Albough to the mouth of the Orwell river near Felixstowe. We got off the boat and walked across the island at this point nicknamed the narrows it only took us 10 mins to walk to the beach. The beach is a steep shingle slope with a flat about half way down idea for setting up camp. The reason Orford has such a good reputation is the water drops away deep straight away so even a small cast will put you in water about 20 metres deep.Copying the boys I chucked out 1 rod baited with lug tipped with squid and the second with a full squid(we used mucky squid, not washed out in processing I think?)The fish started coming shortly after and were steady away all night .Most fish seemed to come about half way between tides when shoals came through the swim as the tide dragged down the beach.Next morning when we packed up for the ferry back at 7:30, Chis (brother)had 16 codling,1 doggyand 2 whitties,Neil 10 codling and I had 6 codling, and a small whitty, all codling weighed in between 5.5lb and about 2.5lb(most about3.5lb).Up to this point I had only had 1 codling of about 2.5lb from the pilot pier Hartlepool so I was well chuffed. Then it was back to the car and 5 hours home ,knackered but happy ,a good weekend
