outboard motor opinion

Well, my 85hp outboard motor (Yamaha 2 stroke) is now coughing and spluttering and is ready for replacement. I'm looking at 75hp evinrude E-tec modern 2 stroke, or Suzuki 70hp. 4 stroke, don't know which is best, but I would appreciate anyone's input about them, or any other models, from new to 2-3 years old.

just my opinion but i would drop down to a honda 50 4 stroke have seen these in action and are ultra quiet and i mean ultra there fuel economy is amazing puls u dont need anything bigger than a 50 on the reiver dont forget chose a dealer that will part ex your current engine

The Suzuki 70hp might be a tad heavy for the back of the Riever Arthur, a smaller Suzuki might be better, why not speak to P.A Lynch up morpeth. There are quite a few new Suzuki's in the marina, more than Merc's, Mariners etc, so they must be good.

thats what i heard mate got advised to stay clear of them they may have sorted the probs as this was last year but you never know

alan has a honda 50 on his reiver and it purrs like a cat he swears by them and says he only used 12 pound a fuel a trip

I only used 12 pound a fuel a trip with my 115 yamaha , only went to the piers and back mind

I dare say all makes/models sizes/2 or 4 stroke etc all have pro's and cons and you'll make your own mind up as which to buy, my opinion is whatever engine you decide upon, buy new. most offer 5 year warranty's and having been down the "outboard f***ed" road myself, i saw the light and if you can afford it pay the extra and buy new, peace of mind is worth a fortune..

Choose a make that has a local dealer for servicing Arthur if you are buying new and want to keep the warranty going

Thanks for all your replies lads, it's certainly food for thought. The reason I am a little hesitant to drop down the hp. is, I use to have a 17ft pilot cathedral hull with a 60hp evinrude ex RNLI 80's motor on the back but with 3 people on board and gear it would sometimes struggle onto the plane if there was a swell. It's just I want to get it right first time and not be disappointed if it's underpowered.
Chris, did you have a 75hp on your reiver!

by lowering the hp you are making the boat lighter hence getting it on the plane faster if you fit some hydro foils (doel fins) to the engine it will plane you easy on around 8knts the only reason i say drop to a 50 is because it wont eat your pocket and you very rarely go over 25knts which a 50 is more than capable of i had 3 people on my superhog with a 40 suzuki i could get it on the plane at 6knts and full speed was around 20knts you will get around 7 mile to the gallon with a 50 4 stroke on the back where as with the 75 you will be getting short of 4 doesnt sound a great deal but over the years thats a massive saving

Thanks deano, what you say makes a lot of sense. Trying right now to contact Alan at Reiver boats as he is a Honda outboard dealer, but can't reach him on his work number. Can anyone tell me the No. for his wedding car business. or any other way of contacting him

there were good deals at PA Lynch on suzukis a while back. The suzi 50 is brilliant motor, whisper quiet and bags of torque

I would avoid bill higham like the plague
