Peelering newbie questions

Had about 2 hours last night peelering for the first time. Had a rummage in the rock pools lifting weed and rocks but only found 3 peelers but plenty of crabs. Have I missed the shore moult or is it the opposite and I'm too early?

Also found three crabs with 'squishy' backs and legs. Not leathery but soft. Will these be any good if used right away or frozen?

Despite a poor result still pretty chuffed that i had a go at it and got a few out :o

Cheers in advance

I'm not that sure James as I'm no crabber but the rivers are starting to produce a few peeler now. I thought the rivers started before the shoreline but like I said, I'm sure someone else could advise you better. Well done on getting a few anyway.

Its a bit early for the local beaches.
Get down in the dark with a lamp. The crab are walking about so no need to break your back turning rocks.
Carry the lamp in your hand as you will be blinded by the reflection if you have it on your heed.
Also, don,t got way out on the beach as most of the crab peel in the higher pools.

Cheers lads. Will try it in the dark. If it's too early now when would you start looking?

It depends a bit on conditions - shore crab don't seem to Iike to peeI if there's a big sea running, but when I've had them from the open shore it's usuaIIy been over the course of a fortnight or so around mid/Iate JuIy.

Gary :)
