the foot snapped while casting my penn affinity fixed spool reel. anyone else had a problem? i know of one other that snapped after just two sessions. been onto gerrys at morcambe and although omly 4 months old not willing to replace it as hes not heard that theres any problem with the composite reel foot. feedback most welcome

Hi mate, I have a fair bit of experience with the surf blasters which for all but a few details are the same reel and I do not believe the reel "foot" to be different in any way between the two.

Firstly I am not overly shocked the reel foot snapped - it is a big, clunky, heavy reel. That said, it isnt what you expect from a new Penn and not a fault when I discussed these reels with 2 of the best Penn guys in this country if not the best, so it seems you have been unlucky.

If you want drop me a PM and I can point you to some excellent places to get it repaired and maybe they can give you more advice also

Surely if it is only 4 months old it is still under guarantee? I would take it back to the shop and demand a replacement as the reel is "not fit for purpose." If he refuses, inform him you will report him to the local trading standards office.

I would contact Penn direct with it only being 4 months old im sure this should still be under warranty as long as you still have your receipt.

Definitely complain to Penn if need be, but Gerry's first as they can't get away with that level of contempt for their customers. Outrageous!

Me and my mate have both snapped the foot on our surfblasters. I don't understand why they use a brittle composite on the reel foot.

I order tackle online all the time but I've only ever ordered from Gerrys once. It was just a few bits and pieces, but they sent the wrong stuff, similar, but wrong, I emailed them twice about it with a copy of the order and a photo of the stuff they sent, but I got no reply from them. I wasn't too bothered so just left it, but I've never used them again. Veals are excellent, great customer service from them.

It happened to my dads surfblaster last week, only it didn't just snap, it disintegrated. His reel is only 6 months old.

Happened to my sons surfblaster about 6 weeks ago,i thought he was just unlucky but from reading replies I think its much more serious.Ive still got the broken reel so a picture to penn will be sent shortly.Iwill post their reply if they bother to get back to me.

Have these reels been snapped by pulling for a break against the reel? If so it's not surprising!!

Seen it loads of time walking back line rubbing on the pier wall.

the problem is now most of penn tackle is made in china low cost to manufacture possible the material is not the best.
you just have to look at sonic tackle when they moved production to china more and more problems that has now give sonic a very bad reputation.
I myself have penn reels and never had a problem latest 2 manufactured in china.
if I purchase on line I tend to use veals have done for years.

Agree, It would be interesting to know how they snapped.

I saw a lad in the summer on the pier, got snagged up and tried to pull it out with the rod, he just pulled and pulled...until his rod just exploded into bits.:D

foot snapped while casting lads. gerrys and purefishing which is gerrys supplier both said you must have knocked it. i can honestly say i did no such thing. the reel snapped at the foot part which enters the whinch fitting on my rod. the line snapped and the reel went over the side. spent 2 hours next day at low tide looking for it but washed away. quoted soga to both the supplier and gerrys. both say the other should replace it so there even arguing amongst themselves. no further forward and both say never heard of the foot snapping. its obvious by the amount of people on here who have either had a problem with the surfblater or affinity that there clearly is an issue. will keep plugging away.
