It's been going on for years in the mallaca straights near singapore, they would come on board, loot anything they could carry, then leave the ship. Only since the somali's started to hijack the ships has it hit the news.
There's a quick and simple solution to the Somali pirate problem.
With all the satellites and monitoring equipment they have up in space, I'm positive that the position of every ship can be tracked. They know which ships are pirate ships and which ports they use. Position a frigate just offshore of where the pirate ships are berthed and when they leave port give them a volley of shots from a six inch gun and send the ship to the bottom; do the same for the next one that go's to sea and again for the next one. Then we'll see how many pirate ships want to leave port to plunder innocent people.
Of course if the Masters of the Universe hadn't decided to shut down a large proportion of British industry in favour of sweat shop factories in the far east and China then we wouldn't have to worry about pirates blockading the trade routes so much. Instead we have to pay twice - once with jobs and again in taxes for the Royal Navy to patrol the shipping lanes so the likes of Mr Dyson and his shareholders can make even more profit than they already were before relocating out of Britain.
You'll never stop them - they don't use ports all they need are a RIB, some AK47's and a grenade launcher. Over thousands of miles of coast it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.
Escort the important stuff like oil tankers and minerals / ore, everthing else should be left to its own devices or let the Chinese patrol the waters - they are their manufactured goods after all. Maybe when the cost of shipping from the far east gets too high we will see manufacturing returned to these shores and Britain's proud tradition of making things (the "workshop of the world") can return.
