Does it make a difference what colours of beads . Bling , sparkly stuff or just a plain wishbone rig for any flatfish as I was talking to a lad off another site who says he catches more fish without all the added bits of extras
Has anybody any advice cheers boys n girls

its all down to having good bait and not the bling

flds, plaice, and dabs, all go by scent, smell, and bait movement, move your rig a few inchs and you will get a bite straight away, the beads make movement in the sand and flatfish being inquisitive will pounce,a lot of lads down south swear by rattling beads, but of course the best fresh bait will help. davy.

Using green and black beads with ragworm, on the pier the other day, I had codling, dab, and whiting! But no plaice. Used the same beads and bait the next day, when I saw you, and got nothing!

I've had three Plaice around the 3lb mark and loads more around the 1 1/2 to 2lb mark. I gave up on wishbone rigs and bling years ago as they never seemed to work for me; a plain 2 hook clipdown rig, 1/0 hooks and a single bead as a bait stop above each hook does the job for me.

I've always found big ragworm baits and distance casting to be more important than fancy rigs but that's just my own experience...

well me being the plaice expert:D I can offer the following advice, 2/0 or 1/0 hook, clear snood, good lively rag worm, and as stewart says chuck the f***r as far as possible. Never bothered with them bead things like:o:D

Got to echo the above, decent bait above all else.
Rigwise, flappers for close/med work & loop rig or wishbone 4 fishing at range.
Bling, blk n green beads or the little tronix rattling blades work well, saying that had plenty on "bare"rigs,I find bait qlty a more important factor tbh,re hooks 1's or 1/0's if the fish r a good stamp,if it's slow going n scratching around, then I'll drop to 2's or smaller if needed.
Just me finding's n experience's:rolleyes:

how true, was going to say SPOT ON

never used them years ago, still had plenty plaice on plain bait.bling thing a money thing imo.:)

Plaice are visual hunters hence the reason virtually all are caught during daylight hours. Lots of lads swear by different colours but I think the main thing is a decent bait along with something extra such as blades / beads / sequins to give your bait an added vibration or movement in the water. It's well known that twitching baits will kick up small plumes of sand and movement that extra attraction to the fish.... It's a similar thing with the attractors. You will catch plenty of good fish with a good plain bait but you can always catch those extra fussy fish on top with those bits of beads etc.

Interestingly, two of my three best Plaice came well after dark...

Yup, I know some are taken after dark and I've caught a few myself but I've personally had more during daylight and the catch reports on here probably would show that aswell (yes I know more people fish during the day!). Plaice have been shown to be visual hunters however as fish tend to feed all through the day and night they should still take a few at night. Maybe the bigger fish are more confidant and more willing to feed at night hence the reason your best have been after dark! Anyway, its all guess work, nice fish by the way!!

very good answer, like your theroy.as said years ago no bling, but possibly now fussy fish may be attracted to this bling stuff?

Good baits in the right circumstances will catch any fish... Be that cod whiting or whatever... You can always maximise your chances by playing the odds ad making them more in your favour but as we all know, even a young kid with a 20 quid rod and reel has a chance of a record so long as they have a line in the water! A plain old worm will catch fish as the chance of good fish but you can always better the odds! :D

I'll be honest I've also had a few smaller ones after dark but 90% of my Plaice have come in daylight on a calm, clear sunny day. It's just that my two best Plaice both came after the sun went down...

In the end alot comes down to confidence. If you are more confident in a rig that has all the bling then go ahead, your confidence makes it more likely you will see fish on the pier. Personally I prefer a plain two hook clipdown and nice big lively ragworm baits belted out as far as I can as this is what has brought me almost all the Plaice I've caught

Yeah I think there is some truth in the old saying of "it's there to catch the angler not the fish" but I've had more fish on blinged up rigs than those that aren't. Maybe that's all in the head  lol. There is certainly a plaice ;) for big ragworm baits or fishing hole small sandeels for larger fish on a plain rig bit I will continue to hip hop my rigs up!! Lol

I thought it was more of a tide thing and not daylight/darkness,havnt had much experience fishing for flatties, but gonna give it a go this year,i know before 1st gate at shields pier has a good reputation for the plaice, any more info to help me get a few will be appreciated, gonna take the kids when im at cresswell caravan, duridge bay will be where im fishing and to the left of the scars at cresswell, cheers lads

Fished the bottom end of druridge bays at summer with Fishingmark after bass / turbot.... Ended up with a bag of flounder. All taken at very close range on ragworm baits mate. The spot was maybe 5mins walk from cresswell caravan park. Fish a flooding tide and the kids will have great fun... Plenty of fish for them
