Prawns

Just got all the paperwork for the next NSFC meeting.

One thing highlighted by the fishery officers reports is the local boats are starting to catch the winter prawns and the larger offshore boats are poised to move in when they start catching in numbers.

I made my comments about how this affects our fishing last april ...but it also set me thinking that if this region has a prawn explosion at this time of year...surely the fish know this and exploit it too.

i have tried prawns and caught on them ...but never concentrated on them as bait...may be worth a try for uptiding...may not.

Just a thought.

Hi Again Dave,

We tried them a couple of times "Boat Casting" but didn't do anything great. We got a few Codling with them but it's an expensive bait to only get a few Codling. If I remember correctly, the last time we took some they ended up in the pan and eaten...!!!(surprise surprise)

We are off out tomorrow....Volante Dave tells me the fishing has been slow this week with most catches less than 8/day.

I think when they refer to the prawn fishery they are talking about langoustine/dublin bay prawns, not prawns of the little cocktail variety. they're my all time favourite seafood and are well armoured I can't imagine any fish really being able to tackle them, the tails are particularly well armoured and spiky under neath

I used big cooked prawns when i went out on Maggie May about month ago. Tied them on with bait cotton and did not get a sniff.Mind they smelled lovely.

Got to admit to doing the same, eating more than I used for bait. I dont think they are expensive when you compair them to a score of worms...and I know which one looks more appetising around teatime when your sarnies have all gone. I am talking about the cooked frozen asian prawns often on offer at Iceland etc.

We had several cod on them drifting the rough ground off hartlepool but Stephen outfished us 2 fish to one on fresh peeler. They did seem to work quite well for tipping off feathers.

Hope to get out sunday but it will be a last minute descision ...and I still havent checked to see if I can get the boat out of the drive yet ...its gonna be dam close.

Luce bay is also on my mind as we had fish there last year at this time and it would be nice to get a couple more tope before the season ends...any volunteers for crewing that trip if it comes off?
