Quick Question!

Yes to the rod - not sure on the reel in honesty...if you're working on a budget you could easily find a second hand ABU 7000 size reel for that kind of cash, much better reel with a proven pedigree...

Hi,nothing wrong with the rod, but you will get it cheaper from one of the local shops. The reel however, I would recomend that you spend a bit more and get a better one such as penn, shimmano, abu, cheap reels are afalse economy, they always let you down.

hi there leckytech they should be ok for inshore boat fishing but i would get a better reel for deeper water ie penn gto or simillar m8 if thats any help

I would say the same as above, yes rod but reel no, Sme canny priced reels o the market and you can get a good penn reel for as little as £45 new.

Worth checking the liks of ID and reel sport that have second hand rods and reels in incase you can get one there.

Ok thanks for the comments guys,

Mmm....

Do you think i'd be better and possibly cheaper buying at a local tackle shop? As generally you tend to find things cheaper online, I mean I have no objection to supporting the local shops as long as they dont try to take the p*ss, a tenner or so more than online prices would be ok.

In saying that you cant beat advice from an unbiased tackleshop owner...

Any suggestions for a good tackle shop in our area preferably my side of the tunnel :)

Great rods but be aware it's a 2 piece rod but the join is just above the butt so the tip section is quite long, I know you said in your other thread that may cause a problem.

I can't understand why that ebay seller won't allow goods to be collected, shame when he's just up the road.

I'd keep an eye out for a good second hand reel, I've won a couple of TLD15's on ebay for less than 50 quid.

If trying a tackle shop most offer discount for club members or NESA members just don't be too shy to ask :)

Hi Kieth,

Yeah, the TLD price shocked me a little, not that I cant afford that.... it was more, can i justify a reel that price as my first one and was there a significant difference between that one and the one on the link above as I read on some threads here that people [it might have been you actually :P] were buying up bearings for them which suggested to me the bearing were a bit suspect.

At the end of the day if that the price you have to pay for reliability then ill easy pay it, Scottish or not... :D

Paul :)

The bearings in TLDs last as long as bearings in any other reel, I just change mine regularly.

If you can, go for a lever drag, as said previously Penn are also good reels.

Good Luck.

My TLD 15 is over 2 seasons old and the only "trouble" I've had was verdigree on the bearings caused by me not washing the reel down with fresh water after a good salty soaking - quick squirt with WD40 and all is fine

Great reels - total workhorses and more than capable of handling anything round these parts

Ok,

Done deal just bought the TLD 15 from Bristol Angling Centre for £105.81, it's made my nose bleed  Thanks for all the advice I know Ive done the right thing, just as well ive just bought SWMBO a laptop :D

Last thing.... the rod, not sure I like the idea of a one piece for travelling in the car, especially if its 8 foot :D

Im confused on tackle bargains, could someone point me at the correct 2 piece rod, a link would be great....

and lastly what class do I go for? Previous thread suggested 20lb but these are rated 10/20, 20/40, 20/50 and 20/60

I promise I'll shutup once i get this info :D

Cheers
Paul

the rod is topper but the reel i coudnt comment on as the lads say the tld is a good bit of kit the reel i use is a diawa sealine and it hasnt failed me in years it can cope with massive pressure and holds alot of line plus the price aint to bad either here is a one from ebay

Sea Fishing Reel Multiplyer Daiwa Sealine 450H on eBay (end time 23-Apr-10 19:29:26 BST)

Sorry Deano just missed your post, think ive done the right thing though, thanks for taking the time though mate :)

The 8 footer is 2 piece Paul, but it's roughly 1 X 2ft piece & 1 x 6ft piece.

I've got the one piece 6'6" version.

They are rated 20/60lb but because it's thin solid carbon it just feels like a 20lb class rod.

if it's a fladen solid carbon you're going for then 20/50 or 20/60 will be the ones to go with ;)

when you see them you'll think you've been sent the wrong rod as they as skinny as a spinning rod but they are very very strong

The two main qualities I like in a boat reel are a low gear ratio and low weight. Your original post had a 5;3/1 which is far too high for boat fishing. That type of ratio is more suited to beach reels where you need to get your gear up off the seabed and wound in fast. Low weight is important because you will be stood holding your gear sometimes for hours on end.

I also like level winds on mine. If using braid it prevents a groove wearing in your thumb. Stainless bearings, lever drag and solid spools are also important.

The penns have a ratio of about 3;6/1 which is better if winding up decent fish, but your Shimano is better still with a 2:1 retreive in low gear. They are also very light and a superb bit of kit.

You dont get this type of spec on a £50 cotton bobbin methinks. Good choice with the Shimano.
