Reel oil

Been cleaning and re-spooling my multiplyers. Was wondering what oil to use as a general lubricant for day to day use ? Only got 3 in 1 , will it be ok ? Reels are Diawa HT and Slosh30 .Any advice ?

Well Beach Boy m8 its okay to use 3 in 1 oil to clean your mutipliers getting the salt and grime off the fixtures then wipe them clean then put a touch of rocket fuel around the bearings okay.:D:D:D

i have several casting videos john holden, dave docra, phil hyde, alam yates reckon just for all round fishin 3-1 is good enough,

so 3-1 oil is all a use in my penn mags and it works a treat as am able to cast about 150yds without bait and bout 120 with average size bait , so unless your into serious distance casting i personally not use rocket fuel,

but then again wat works for one does not necsesary work for another

Depending on the brand, certain types of 3-in-1 oil is close to the viscosity of Rocket Fuel (within normal working temperatures) and for years that's what most folks used for their reels because it's what everyone had in their sheds.

Some very big casters in America/Canada use Penn reel oil (the stuff you get with any Penn multiplier), Rem oil (Remington made) and 3-in-1.

Rocket Fuel is overrated in my opinion, purely because folks tend to recommend it based on the increased speed it can add to a reel but unless you're chasing a speed-demon reel and very long range casting this is of no benefit when fishing.

I'm not saying Rocket Fuel is bad, before anyone jumps all over me - quite simply, most anglers just don't need the extra performance it offers.

I use the tube of oil that comes with any new multiplier I buy on every other multiplier I fish with until it's gone (usually take a very, very, very long time to work through it).

3-in-1 works just fine.

It may not be everyone's cup of favourite beverage but if you already have some you can safely use it. I have a couple of Abu 5500 reels that I use for lure fishing that run wickedly fast and all I've done is clean them thoroughly, dry them thoroughly (arguably the most important step) leave one brake block in and lubricate them with 3-in-1.

I'm not meaning any of the above to be contentious; 3-in-1 can and does work.

Other lubricants can make the reel run faster, but that may not be what you want (it's not what I want from my reels).

If that's your goal feel free to spend a few pennies, flush out the bearings and re-oil with Rocket Fuel.

For the record my out-of-the-box reels can cast a very long way by dropping to one brake block and leaving the lube (which is often a little excessive on a new reel) exactly as it is.

Think about it.

Rocket fuels very good but if the bearings are full of dirt it won't matter what you use.
Take the bearings out, put them in brake cleaner or lighter fluid for an hour giving them a spin round a few times in the fluid, take them
Out n leave to dry for 30 mins then oil up rocket oil, your bearings will have a new lease of life mate

Thanks for the input lads , I think 3-1 is ok for what i need my reels to do and that is overall performance. Not field casting but fishing at reasonable distances ? As long as i can make the reel "sing" is good for me.

Yes mate spot on, no good having a reel that's to fast to use

hi mate:)
i use a general matenance spray grease and some bisely gun oil which ive had for years:)
it shouldnt work but it keeps my reels running nice and smooth:D

ive seen u cast beach boy , u gonna need crude oil lol......anythehoo....read recently that 3in1/wd40 spins off the bearings faster than rocket fuel . basically rocket fuel stays on for longer on the bearing ...blablabla, u love ur toys beachboy and they all get used very regularly so i wud say rocket fuel (not the fast one tho ) or castrol gtx 10/40:)

some misunderstandings here - oil is required for control and lubrication. 3 in 1 does work, but too much makes the balls in the housing skid and then flat spot - too little and the reel becomes too fast (the bearings throw the oil out as it heats and thins ad infinitum!) if you try red rocket fuel two drops max in each bearing - clean bearing - you may get a full season out of the reel.
hope this helps.

Rocket fuel is initially used to slow the reel down so on balance 3 in 1 makes the reel run faster. The other observations about longer retention of oil also are significant. For my reel I used yellow rocket fuel for the spool mechanisms as well. Below is an excerpt from a previous post (can't figure out how to link it doh)

The Rocket Fuel might be helpful for you to slow the reel down initially. Think of it like motor oil 10W 40 except the viscosity change is due to the reel turning fast not due to temperature like in a car. This property is called thixotropy, same idea as tomato sauce getting thinner when you shake the bottle.

Honestly lads, any of the above Rocket fuel or 3 in 1 will do.

As long as its running smooth it's down to the lad thats castng the reel that makes the difference not the oil.

...that's unless you want to gain 10yards on a field!

hear hear, the lad just wantd to know if 3-1 oil would be o k to use on his reel and it is

Iv'e oiled all 3 of my reels with 3-1 now and are running smooth , I'll keep my eye on them and keep fingers crossed they stay that way?
