Referendum - too close to call?

The problem with looking at "average wages by region" is that it tells you almost nothing. For instance the South East does indeed have the highest average, or "mean" wage in the country, but that is skewed by the numbers of extremely high earners which pushes up the average and is no indicator of what the "ordinary" worker earns. Equally, in a high unemployment area like the North East or Scotland, the non earners pull down the average or "mean" and again is no indicator of what the "ordinary" worker earns. Far better to look at the "Median" wage, the wage that is in the middles or the "Mode" wage, the one that occurs most often.

This still shows the South East wage to be higher than the North East and Scotland, but the difference is much less. When you factor in the South East cost of living, I would rather live in Scotland or the North East on a mode or median wage than the South East any day.

Although getting slightly away from the point...this is actually an excellent post and factually correct, as well as being a decent example of the difference between "mean, median and mode" which the newspapers tend to mould to their advantage to distort the facts and stats
I agree entirely Kayos

But the higher cost of living down south gives an on par similarity. Work abroad and earn a tax free wage ....... ya never heard that from me mind Liam lol

Tax free :o:o:o argg! my ears! ;)

So how did the vote go Kayos, did you wear your kilt to the polling station whilst drinking your irn bru?

It was incredibly busy, took me 45 mins just to get into the station! I'm afraid I don't own a kilt(don't have the legs for it!). The Irn Bru and Caramel logs kept me going while I waited, plus a fag of course. I suppose I better go back to work soon. :(

Ha, no idea what that means!?

Mark since you started this thread I've been paying abit more interest in this
Salmond fella, my opinion is he's an absolute nutter who wants to become king of Scotland.the Scotsmen in the oil industry couldn't stand us English up in Aberdeen saying we were stealing there jobs, the problem was half of the scots offshore were fishermen and farmers that's why salmond can't stand Westminster.

problem is salmon will get the jocks voting with their hearts and not their nappers, I'll wager most of the ones that go for the yes vote will be secretly relieved if the no vote gets it.:D

Interesting Gordon, do tell why it would be intellectually unsound to vote yes?

Haha, well maybe not King of Sctland! The irony is mate, if we do become independent, Labour will form the next government, so Alex is doing his bit for his country, knowing he and his party will not govern it. So maybe he is a nutter, but not for the reasons you think. :)

financial mate, such a small insignificant gdp meaning Scotland will fall into the abyss, plus we'll not have anywhere to park wor subs up:D

Really Gordon, the facts do not back up that statement. Countless neutral studies have Scotland at between 8th and 14th on the list of wealthiest countries, with the UK(inc Scotland) stubbornly down at 18th to 19th. When we win independence, our GDP will be taken out the equation and the remaining rump of the UK will drop even further.

Matches at the ready to keep my eyes open if it looks close! Thankfully cancelled all my work tomorrow. Could be a weekend to end all weekends! :)

Considering I was born down south as you call it Outkast 76 and have work all over the uk,I'm afraid you are ill informed.
Maybe the people working in London, but the vast majority are not all hooray Henry's ,you believe too much of what ya read in the press (RUBBISH)

No I speak facts and not what I read, We have 2 plants down south, One in Banbury and the other in Fradley, They do exactly the same as our plant in Washington and are on a better wage so yeah if you say so :)

I don't think you have quite grasped the argument. Higher wages in the South East, but the difference does not make up for the much higher cost of living. The North East is one of the cheapest places in the UK to live in.

Erm, I'm pretty sure I did grasp it, He said Mark wants to trying living down south with average wages and everything more expensive,I said the wages are better down south to which he replied I am ill informed!!
Yes the cost of living is more expensive down south but the fact still remains they get better wages than we do for the same working hours so his argument is totally pointless
Also the difference does make up for the extra cost of living...That's why they get that extra and the cost of living is not that "much higher"

Fair enough, I'll just stick to the referendum issue! :)

Freedom!!! Lol. I can't help think I would love the scots to vote yes on one hand but I honesty think we all would be weaker for them leaving. Will be intersting to see what happens. As previously mentioned, as a Geordie I feel more affiliated with the scots than most of the English anyway lol..... Don't go ... Sniff sniff :(
