20lbs main line 60lbs shocker,rig body 50 lbs and hook snood 40lbs in a pennel paternosta set up with size4.0 or 5.0 hooks [never understand why people use a smaller hook for the slider, is there a reason] a 6 oz lead with grippers and a snap on swivle to attach the rig to the main line an impact shield and loads of bait, and thats about it.

I don't go that small, 2/0's tend to pick up cod and better whities in September. Can sometimes mean a blank as smaller fish are harder to catch, which isn't always a bad thing.

after last year im going to fish 2 times out of three with no hooks or bait, save money and get similar results

I havent fished in the winter off the rocks for years but this year I will use what I used to back then. Simple paternoster using siongle hook or a peennel but using blood loops instead of swivels. The only bit of hardware I use will be a rotten bottom link on the end of heavy mainline. Dont like using swivels and bait clips etc etc when I normally lose the lot on rough ground.

What kind of hooks you use sean? sep oct nov dec jan feb etc etc i know the sizes you use but what makes? want some strong hooks this yr am also not using 1/0's after august.

Don't be frightened to use big hooks and big baits. Cod have HUGE mouths.

Richie - we often use 10/0s on the boat ...like Sean says even a 3lb Codling has a huge mouth

KeithB Caught a 13lb Cod on the boat yesterday using a 10/0 with a whole squid and side of macky as bait...I caught a big Ling with just a 5/0 and strip of mackerel

have a butchers here...

I would never advocate using 10/0s from the shore though

This winter season is gonna be interesting for me, trying new hooks & better marks + diff rig setups and me new headlamp n all in 1 suit.
