Starting to think along the lines of building rigs ready for the winter season

What are peoples must have Rig Components?

Break Away Shields?

What style of bait clips do people prefer?

Preferred brand of swivel or is it a case of the cheap blacked barrel?

Must admit i tend to go with whatever is cheap as i only use a rig for one session then strip and clean it so if i spot any problem while doing that i bin it.
I tend not to use bait shield,i prefer a simple rig clip.

As you well know i like to keep my rigs simple lol but i only use 3 items on any rig these days

1 A good Hook
2 A Swivel
3 A Link clip (the bait clip type)

I find with these 3 bits i can make anything from a flapper to a up and over clip down pulley pennel lol

Hey Tony, just starting to rebuild all mine for the winter as well, flatty rigs will be getting put away after next friday. For me it's got to be good stuff; rig body is 80lb Suffix, hooklengths 40lb Suffix or Amnesia. Swivels have to be best I can get (certainly not those cheap Chinese things!) & I usually use a size or two bigger than is really needed.

Baitclip-wise, mostly use flappers for my night-time fishing, but if using a clip it's either Imps or, over rough ground a simple Genie clip - only really use shields for long range stuff where the bait needs maximum streamlining over clean-ish ground (ie. N/Shields fish quay, places like that).

Real rough ground stuff I use a swivel at the top & leadlink at the bottom (with a rotten-bottom set-up) & that's it - traces are attached with a simple loop-to-loop.

I can show you a few that I use at the next SBRAAC meet (whenever that is?) if you like. Main thing is don't skimp on cheap gear at the end where it matters!

Gary whats your main line weight? just to be curious... cos 80lb rig body then 40lb hook you will need 100lb main line lol unless your 80lb all the way without shot.

Most anglers will either use 30lb straight through if fishing rough or if using a leader will have a 15lb+ mainline with at least a 60lb leader

The rule of thumb being that it's 10lb of leader breaking strain for every 1 oz of lead being cast

Yeah, to clarify, for rough-stuff it's always 30lb with 60lb shock leader - this'll smash out of any snags (so long as you use a rotten-bottom set-up) or 20lb / 60lb leader for mixed type stuff down to 15lb with a tapered 15-65lb leader for clean / long range stuff. I rarely use heavy line straight through (occasionally 40lb Greylon which is tuff as owt!) as I prefer the extra durability of a heavier leader when pulling fish over rocks & kelp. I always use a bimini knot when joining mainline to leader.

Rig-bodies I always use 80lb & hooklengths 40lb (sometimes 50) unless for flatties & the like where it's 15 or 20lb, or even 8 - 10lb flourocarbon when float fishing.

i'm trying a new technique, "experimenting" with "Wonder woman beads" or boobie beads lol, it has a warning (this is a quote lol) "WE ISSUE A WARNING WITH EVERY PACKET OF BOOBYS, EASE THE CLUTCH ON YOUR REEL OR HANG ONTO YOUR ROD. A RESONABLE FISH WILL USUALLY HIT YOUR BAIT VERY HARD INDEED!" can you smell that?? its like i'm in the countryside again lol.... giving it a shot anyways, who knows... lol anyone?????

I prefer the Breakaway Relay Clips as you can slide them where you want and they can't come off like some bait clips. 20lb main line, 60lb Greased Weasel shocker with a rotten bottom for rough ground. 40inch rig for 2 pennel rig hooklengths. The bottom on a running ledger set up, clipped up the line and the top hook clipped down on 15lb Amnesia. Kamasan Aberdeens for general use and O'Shaunessy's for bigger stuff. Loads of beads, sequin's and crimps to suit.

I've used the Breakaway Coil Crimps for the last few years...is it worth changing from these to normal crimps? Does anyone use any other method?

Haven't come across "coil crimps" before (I'll have to have a look in the shop later!) but for adjustable traces yes, I'll use the 22lb power-gum instead of crimps - exactly the same knot as I'd use when float fishing. Never tried the pulley things, although I hear they work well, as I'm not a big fan of pulley-rigs.

For a one hook clipped-down rig I find those SRT springs quite useful - they help to maintain a bit of tension in the rig while casting.

I wouldn't use 5/0 hooks all season either Tony. I normally go up a size every month.

October - 2/0
November - 3/0
December - 4/0
