River Tyne Retreat!
After getting a last minute detail that will have me away until the beginning of July, I returned home determined to get out once before my departure!
I had seen whilst checking the weather at home that we are forecast for N to NE for the majority of the week!
Kieth and I had a plan as we travelled down to some of our local rock marks two hours before low water which was at 1910hrs. LW was approximately 1.5m.
On arrival it was clear that this just wasn't going to happen. From the rock marks the sea was just too big. The beach that we normally fish and succesfully target Bass, had a really nice surf on and with the tide the hole we fish would have been full of water! One problem, my waders are unserviceable and have a new owner, with a new set on order!
Time spent on recce seldom time wasted....but we left having learn't more about where we fish!
The Beach was tempting due to the movement, a bit of colour and it was overcast leading into night. We would have easily held bottom and although it has produced on a slight Northernly in the past, I wondered if the wind last night was just too strong at approximately 20mph!
If we had fished it it would have been for nothing other than in the hope of a bigger Bass.
We drove along the Coast having a look at how the conditions effected the marks we normally fish.
Cullercoats Harbour and the Black Middens would have fished but I prefer certainly the first in the Winter.
Our minds were set on a more comfortable setting!
We arrived at a mark near the entrance of North Shields Marina.
We looked more like two blokes out in the middle of December but we were happy we had worn the gear because it rained...big time!
We were using rag and peeler. It was the quietest session we have had all year so far. Kieth still managed to produce a small codling, which had the snood cut in order to return.
We fished up until two hours after HW and then returned to the warmth of homes. Technically with one winter session in the bag!

A couple of points to note for anyone who wishes to fish there.

Firstly consider the use of a rotten bottom as it is snaggy in places and secondly beware the vessels coming into/from the marina.

It would be best if there is any doubt to retrieve and then cast out again in order to maintain good relations.

I think this location is one that could be taken away due to the litter that is left by those who fish there and the fires that are set.

It would be a shame as I know of two excellent Cod that were caught there over the last Winter!
I hope once the weather settles the fishing is productive for those looking to get out. I will keep an eye on the site and look forward to wetting a line in July!

All the Best,
Wayne.
