River Wear - Seatrout

Where did you see them mark? I am thinking about having a go on either Friday or Saturday night (whether dependable) down at Stanhope.

I\'ll let you know how I get on!

Cheers
James

walked from the bridge at stanhope upstream most of the way to eastgate, under the bridge at stanhope, as always, but also at the weir by the railway bridge, and then, my fave spot, which is just over half way, keep on the left till you get to the bungalow then cross over the river and go a bit further up, couple of hunder yards or so, there quite a long glide. fished from the far side of the river you can fish into the pools under the trees on the bungalow side

Mark - How do you normally go for them at Stanhope, I have never fished there for Sea Trout mainly for the Brownies, so I know there is some canny Fly Water, can you recommend any pointers?

Cheers

mark normally uses a garden fork or hand grenades :o

not entirely true.....

had more success with spinners than flies, something shiny - dexter, abu koster usually,

on the fluffy front, silver blue and teal, in big sizes or something mcukle that you might use for pollack/mackeral, - clouser minnow, stuff like that.

under the bridge at stanhope is a good spot but casting is a bit strange, theres some rocks about 6 foot above the water on bank wjere the main footpath is but because of the low trees above you sort of have to side cast but with your rod below you, cast under the bridge, let the current take it downstrean as it sinks then whip yer fly back past thee buggers!

pot luck in the wier, cast into the bottom of the drop and let the water wash the fly to the bottom and downstream as you retrieve

best times are just before dusk and into the early night, which is mental, as the bit by the bridge get so dark it feel like your trying to cast a fly inside a sleeping bag at times..sometime you hit the bridge, sometime tress above, sometimes the opposite side and if your luckt occasionally in the water, up by the weir is not so bad as there\'s at least a bit of clearance

if all else fails a 36\" carp landing net is quite effective, or there are allegedly dark tales of certain individuals tying 6 to 10 size 6 trebles an inch or so apart on a handline and jiggin it up and down from the bridge

Hi Mark
Just heard the Stanhope filling station is shut - Where do you get your tickets from these days?

Hello Mark
Thanks for the information! I found it!

Managed a few hours on Saturday Morning:

Report as follows:

Started off at Hag bridge just outside Eastgate, Fished the bridge pool first with the Worm.
I had a couple of small plucks however I put these down to tiny brownies. Moved upstream to the small weir,
Every piece of slack water had Sea trout in. Some of these fish must have been approaching double figures
however a combination of low, clear water did nothing to help my cause.

The fish seemed quiet restless and were jumping clear out the water time and time again, adding to me frustration!

No joy up at the bridge or the weir so I moved downstream fishing every likely pool I came across! Still no joy so I opted for a break, by this time
my waders were bloody steaming!

Jumped into the car and fished the two the pools suggested by your good self. First I walked up to the cottage and fished that pool down with
the fly. Had two cracking takes on a size 10 double Black and Silver stoats. Missed both takes.....

Fished that pool down and decided to move down to the gauging station, I could not believe how many small brownies were trying to jump up the weir, there was loads
of them, some were well over size aswell. Fished the weir for an hour or so with the worm, again I could any manage a couple of brownies.

All in all, had a great morning, pleasing to see so many fish populating every pool I came across! Praying for a good rain to the get them moving again!

Hoping to get back up there before the end of the season!

Ps - Absolute Value for money at £6!

Cheers
James

catch the water when its right an you\'ve got to fight em off. the brownies are there all year round, early evening in may/june is mental on the dry. had fish take before the fly even hits the water, literally leaping at the fly when its still a foot in the air

did you try aspinning for the big uns, they are always a bit more eager during the day to take a spinner, you really need evening into the night to get em on the fly, at this time of year, you can sit by a poo and watch them motion less, then all of a sudden as the light is almost gone its a race upstream to the next pool

Hi Mark
I tried the spinner down by the cottage, that is a cracking little stretch!
All I had was Brownies, but the sea-trout were there!

I\'m keeping an eye on the weather for the weekend, fingers crossed the rain will come before the end of the season!

What\'s the crac with fishing the quarry, are there any fish in it?

I\'ve also fished the Stanhope to Wolsingham club water, I got a permit from an a house up the lane from the filling station, it was a number of years back but I had some cracking fish... can you still get day permits for that water?

Cheers

there are some big brownies in the quarry, and its never fished. It was bought some years back by someone who wanted to put a caravan park there but it got turned down, don\'t know who they are or where they are but have given it a go myself a time or 2 but never hooked anything.

On a good bright day just lean on the fence with a pair of polaroids on and watch, I\'ve seen brown trout crusing around the old pumping station a good 18\" in length, but never managed to get one, although I\'ve never made a concerted effort to target them,

the frosterly stretch of the river is part owned by the big caravan site there so that probably the best place to start for permission. I know that anyone with a van on that site can fish it automatically and there is a club in frosterly, but I\'ve never actually been down that bit myself,

its raining up here now and there lots forecast or the next couple of days so should be spot on at the weekend

I love the stretch by the cottage and have spent hours stood in the middle of the river there, there\'s several kingfishers on that stretch, loads of water voles, etc and if you stand long enough they eventually just ignore you anf go about there normal business. the kinfishers, will fish right infront of you and perch right next to you as you fish.

its probably my al time favourite stretch of water to fish the dry, adams or anything small and black, or small white moth patterns are deadly for the brownies in early summer

pheasant tale nymphs and hares ears work all year round

take a walk along there around christmas time and you can pick the sea trout, and salmon out by hand - allegedly ;-)

the glide under the brifge at stanhope down to the stepping stones is cracking as well, as long as there\'s nee chavs from sunderland jumping in the river

Hi Mark - I think I might give that quarry a go next year, worst that can happen is to be told to sling your hook.... ....... ...... god that was terrible...

I have scheduled a morning in on Saturday, it\'s raining here in Gateshead, fingers crossed it\'s going to continue a couple of days.

I will be starting at the Gauging station approx 07:15 on saturday if your about.

There are some cracking steteches down from the stepping stones
in between the two bridges, but I have no idea how to get a permit for there now....... any ideas?

Keep the weather/river state updates coming

Cheers

the stretch that runs through Stanhope is a cracking stretch throughout. It s th edomain of stanhope angling assocaition, and I\'ve never actually seen anyone fish it!

Stanhope Angling Association
J J Lee, 1 Eastcroft, Stanhope, Co Durham

now things have changed or so I\'ve heard. A few yearsback I made enquiries about joining.

I made contact, and before being told the details, I was asked where do I live and how long have I lived there

was then told there\'s no new memberships. basically I wasn\'t local enough, but I\'ve heard they\'re a bit more welcomng now

give the grey bull in stanhope a bell first, as apparently they are now having club get togethers in there once a month, might be an easier inroad.

Hi Mark
Cheers for the information!! I\'m thinking about dropping this guy a note to ask the possibilties of membership next year???

It looks likes my plea for rain has been answered, maybe too much in some places! Looking forward to Saturday!

Have you been done the river today? just wondering if the rains ran off the hills yet?

Cheers
JamesC

I work on the rivers and their does\'nt seem to be much extra water in the wear today, theirs been a bit rain in the last few hours so it might be up tomorra if the rain keeps on.

Noticed loads more kingfisher about this year

have a look now and its in full spate up here. the new water gauges at the ford in stanhope are showing 4 feet over the stepping stones..

and its still raining

Cheers Lads
Hopefully it will drop a bit before Saturday!

Ref the Kingfishers, I have seen loads up at westgate this year, they are so fast quick!

I would rather have them hammering the wee fish stocks than the big black uns!

Cheers
JamesC

watched em scudding over the ford in numbers at stanhope earlier on, the river looks like british rail tea with no milk, but the big bars of silver that were going through stood out a mile, if only I\'d had me nets with me!
