Rod Rests

what are peoples preferred makes of rod rests:question:

I'm quite taken with the Shakespeare Salt one...what do you reckon

Ian Golds 6 or 7ft, tough and easy to get spares for. Nearly all optional extras will fit.

Stay clear of telescopic legs, only something to go wrong.

extras i would recommend are a leg locking kit and trace bar.

Got an Ian Gold's 6ft Supermatch... had it for years and it hasn't fell over yet! Only trouble I ever had was when I accidentally dropped it and broke the plastic rod holding bracket. Replaced it with a metal one and never looked back. If you get the opportuntity look at Veals Mail order (sure they have a website) their's are all metal with no plastic components - as good if not better than the Ian Golds, similiarly priced aswell.

Rodrests.

Rodrests.

I,ve got this jim dandy thing which has extendable legs, arms, holders.etc
The only problem is the wieght. It goes in a balck bag but is rather heavy to carry.
The best rest is the old metal poles on the end of the heugh and some cheap tie things. Like yellow bendy metal with a rubber coating 4 for a quid in the pound shop.
I often wish i had just bought the simple three leg aluminium rod stands. Fold up under your arm and bish bosh when you get to your fishing spot it takes about two seconds to set up.

IanS - The man with the drug dealers fishing boat - used to make powder coated bomb proof all metal rod rest bits to replace the plastic on some canny expensive ones. If a rod rest's got plastic on it then IMHO it's only a matter of time before it goes over and explodes into a million bits. I got lucky at a place I worked and this super craftsman (Payed to sweep up in a college basically) took the plastic bits off me and cut them out of chunks of metal on a machine.

Watching a rod on a rod rest means....it might be a fish, it might be the wind, it might be the sea, it might be seaweed or bog roll or a bit of wood etc etc. Hold your rod and you'll know, eventually, whether it is a fish or any of the above AND you'll save your money and learn more about the sea. Unfortunately you'll also get gout in your prefered big toe but it'll be worth it.

There's people's houses that have fallen over man, your rod rest will fall over sometime for definite, it's how it handles the falling over experience.

But then again maybe it wont fall over and if it does nowt will happen or it does and opens a fissure in the rocks that exposes a glimpse of some really valuable pagan necklace which leads to a four hour film about everything.

It's possible and I'm off to bed in a bit

Stores give over man, you'll be adding a section to your next book on "Fishing Without Bait or Tackle"

Approach the fish area wearing goatskin shorts, dive in head first, nut the big 'uns and eat them.

:D

Ell. Are you teasing me?

The bottom line is that you don't need anything you don't need. Obvious? Course it is. Followed by the masses? I suspect not. Carry your stand, then your big box, then your waterproofs...............where does the trifle go? There are a maximum of 7 things that need to go in a basket and the optional extra is a fish bag and none of them is a stand. Send your homework direct to me and I'll have it marked by your next trip out.

Use mine as a wading stick at times and is also good for putting rod onto when baiting up, so you see david you dont have to put the rod in the stand for bite detection, i dont usually but on the odd occasion i do.

The Salt rest is very good value at£30

Just been on Blyth beach and a father and son fishing with one of those metal, twisted rod things you see on building site with a hook at the top.
Seemed to work fine as a rest.

i was in fishing republic the other week, they had some expensive looking all singing all dancing adjustable rest in there, looked like it was made from a fair bit of chromed castings, just right for a couple of dips in salt water to tighten up those loose moving bits ;):)
