It is your rod you do as you like, but me! I would leave well alone. sell it to buy a proper flattiy rod or just buy one outright. Just feel you may live to regret the hacksaw job.

You can get an 11' 6'' Shakespear salt flattie rod for about £25. Casts 1-3 oz and is spot on in my opinion for the money.

As said, don't butcher your rod, you would probably find it still would'nt be suitable for what you want then you have lost that rod too. There are plenty of cheap options out there for that type of fishing, Shakespeare and Ron Thompson have a few different rods that would be suitable.

Best thing to do is get around as many different tackle shops as possible and have a feel of the different rods and find one that feels comfortable and is in the right price range. Don't go buying the first one you see as you will most likely find a better or cheaper one somewhere else. If you have a Boyes shop near you have a look in there too as they have some canny light rods and light fixed spool reels that would be suitable too. I often use a Carp rod for flatfish and it is good fun as they are very light. I hit almost every shop in the area before I found one with an action I was comfortable with. You can also use them for float fishing and spinning as they are light enough for those uses too.

Jim.
