Had a few hours on Roker this evening for only my third trip out of 2013. Arrived just before 4pm to find the pier packed but managed to squeeze in to a spot just past the second set of steps. Got set up with two rods, one with big baits cast out and the other scratching close in.

Things were very quiet and people started to drift away complaining about blanking. After a couple of hours the scratching rod gave a good rattle which resulted in this little feller to save the blank:

As dusk descended things picked up a little, nothing special or of any size but I did manage three little codlets, this one probably being the biggest:

With nothing at all showing an interest in the big baits I decided to make a move down to the Barrier for the last hour or so. First chuck with the scratching rod saw another good rattle and this on the pier:

Had another Pollack shortly afterwards and that was that. Not a bad session, 6 fish and three different species though no sign of any Whiting or decent sized codling. All the fish came to the close in scratching rod and a small chunk of Bluey for bait, lugworm and mussel weren't touched all day.

well done m8 me and 2 mates must have been close to you were you on your own we had same kind of night nothing until dark then small stuff close in

You did better than me,i went down Roker at about 6.00pm and stayed until 12.00 am and all I had to show for it was a codling about 6ins long and a rockling about 4 ins long.Conditions later on should have produced fish as the sea picked up a little and the temperature dropped ,only thing was the tide was only small lets hope the bigger tides later on in the week start to produce!

It's why I like to fish two rods at this time of year. You can have one out with big baits just in case and the other in close scratching with a bit of Bluey or Mackerel for bait to keep the interest going.

That said when I moved down to the Barrier one of the lads already there had caught a 40cm Pollock on his scratching rod 10 yards out...

Aye its a good idea as it can be boring watching one big bait hoping for a big fish. Smaller baits on second rod keeps u occupied.

Mick.
